Pocket Navy of Republic of Georgia

Hi guys!
I would like to continue duscussion about pocket navies around the world. I think it’s gonna be interesting to get more info on ex USSR countries. One of them is Georgia, which after revolution of “roses” started to pay more attention on it’s navy. Here is what I found in NET… :

Patrol Ships
“Aeti” – ex German Mine Sweeper М-1085 Minden

Missle boats:
“Dioscuria” (La Combatante II class) – ex Greek “Ipoploiarchos Batsis”
“Tbilisi” – ex Ukranian “Konotop”

Patrol boats
“Batumi”
“Akmeta”
“Iberia”
“Kutaisi”
“Tskaltubo”
“Gantiadi”
+27 other smaller Patrol Boats of different origin
+4 small landing crafts & boats

Anyone who can contribute photos or additional info would be greatly appreciated… Also interesting to find any information about so called Abkhaz Navy (part of Georgia proclaimed it’s Independence).

Yours… :diablo:

Thanks for that Ristan, the “Tbilisi” look very similar to the Vietnamese BPS-500.

I have no info on Vietnamese Navy… 🙁 Most probably the same type, provided to Vietnam by soviets. According to Jane’s Fighting Ships 2004 there is no anymore boats of this type in Russian navy. There are still some in Ukranian navy, but they gonna remove them soon (or sell them to Georgia with high price, as they do with “Tbilisi”) The anecdotic point in all the story with “Tbilisi”, that it was sold to Georgia on wery high price for boat in such condition (actually boat was in poor condition, specially engines. After contract was signed Georgians make extra payment for it’s fixing) :p I’ve seen somewhere photo of “Tbilisi” in 1999, where condition of boat is obviouse poor. I’ll post it if I find again.

Canpark – I think Azerbaijan or Kazakhstan it’s theme for another thread… 😉

Here are some info from russian forums (based on Georgian intelligence report) on Abkhaz Navy… :diablo:

1 Patrol Boat “Tarantul” class (project 205P) (245t, 35kn, 1×2 ZU23 23mm anti-air gun, probably “Grad” missile system installed)
2 to 6 Patrol boats “Grif” class (project 1400) (50t, 30kn, 1×2 ZU23 23mm anti-air gun, 1×2 UB32 or UB16 missile system (taken from helicopters)
9 to 22 smaller (3-5t) patrol boats (“Nevka” & “Strizh” type) used for coast guarding…

but i think the reality is quite far from report… :dev2: On Abkhazian website (http://www.abkhaziya.org/gallery.html?mi=15) i found photogallery on military training of Abkhaz army (dated 2004) On the photo is visible artillery boat which is obviouse to be project 1204 boat. If (!) abkhazians have at least few of them, it gonna be a real trouble for georgian navy near abkhaz coast. They are specially designed for coast defence & in cooperation with land installations could prevent any georgian landing operation.

Photos
1-1×2 UB32 missile system onboard of “Grif” type Patrol boat
2-Abkhaz “Grif” type Patrol boat
3-Pr. 1204 abkhaz artillery boat at military trainings in 2004
4-Russian pr. 1204 boats of Caspian fleet (just close up…)

Does anybody has german “Linden” class minesweeper linedrawings???

Ris: Mate just because they have old equipment doesn’t mean they lack fighting spirit 😉

“Fighting spirit” of course is a great thing… But it has no power without proper weapon. 😉 Beside this don’t forget about abkhazians, who also has “fighting spirit” (if not higher) plus naval ships, which was captured from the same georgians during 1992-1993 :diablo: … Hope soon I place some info on Abkhaz ships aswell… 😎

best regards… :diablo:

Some more info

On official Greek navy page I found some photos of transferring missile boat “Dioscuria” to Georgian navy (source: http://www.hellenicnavy.gr/new_details_old_press.asp?new_id=673) quite intersting… 😉 Specially second photo where at the front is one of “Lindos” class patrol boats, presented to Georgia in 1998. Does anybody has technical info or line drawing of this type of ships??
Also I’m placing here photos of patrol boat “Kutaisi” (turkish built; photo taken fron BLACKSEAFOR website) & Georgia Coast guard Zodiak class patrol boat… (on the background Missile boat “Tbilisi”) :diablo:

Georgia has a well equiped force in it’s naval arm for the little water access it has, I woun’dn’t want to take them on!

Dear Ja Worsley, I disagree with you… :diablo: According to my data the most of the ships are quite old and was purchased in poor condition and disarmed (later part of them was armed by old Russian 23-mm antiair guns or obsolete (after WWII type) 37-mm naval 70-K guns). The only real “power” could represent missile boats (“Dioscuria” & “Tbilisi”), Turkish built patrol boat “Kutaisi” and ex-German Lindau class minesweeper (now patrol ship) “Aeti”. The rest of the ships are small “second hand” patrol crafts builded in Russia, Ukraine or US with little speed and in poor condition. Also, according to some news boats has missiles only for few shots (both approx. 6 to 8).
Unfortunately I don’t have more information, but I think maintaining old, different type and origin small crafts is more headake for such poor country like Georgia, than a real strength of it’s navy. 😮
