Podded Engines in combat aircraft

apart from the Me 262, Yak-38 or whatever it’s called, and the A-10..why haven’t Podded engine lay out been too successful? We often see some kind of candidate with a podded engine lay out in both American and Soviet designs that competed with modern fighters suchas the MiG-29, F-15, etc..
