Polikarpov Po-2 Soviet biplane flight

Haven’t seen this fly in a long time, the Polikarpov Po-2 Soviet biplane. The plane is well known for it use in night time raids by the famous “Night Witches.” Kermit Weeks takes his for this flight.

Just an anal point of historical accuracy……

Unless it is post July 1944, it would have been called a U-2.

It was re-named as Po-2 to honour its designer Nikolai Polikarpov after his death in 1944.

Ken – yes I know, an anorak.

[Re Week’s example, just to be clear] Well, here we have an aircraft with an utterly inexhaustible number of spectacular (even by VVS standards), beautiful, interesting and important historically authentic painting schemes to choose from. And what do we find in this case? Some kind of dour and inauthentic khaki colour, with what I can only describe as areas of ‘sewage’ type paint over parts (e.g. the fuselage spine). To my eyes, ugly beyond belief. More than that, however, incorrect for any area or era of service for this ubiquitous biplane. We can put the other markings present into the same category.

With this machine, in particular, it is really a case of Pandora’s Box with regards to finish. I would very much like to see a wee bit more creativity employed in that respect than ‘dirt brown with 1960’s decal sheet stars’….

Just me, perhaps (or not).

Delightful aeroplane. But is there another ‘Warbird’ type machine more in need of a re-painting job, I wonder?

Answers on a post card….

Why, what’s wrong with it??
It looks OK.

The Shuttleworth exanple has been flying for a couple of seasons now.
It’s just had a new prop fitted.

Kermit Weeks just posted a Kermie Cam cockpit video of the same plane, on the same flight day. You see him wearing the GoPro in your posted video. Pretty cool.

Isn’t there one flying at Shuttleworth now?
