Adam Smigelski of 306 Squadron was not an “ace” even though he had a distinguished combat record. His greatest fight was with Hauptman Pingel, the 40-victory German ace, Hurricane IIB vs. Bf 109F-2. He did not get credit for the victory even though the fight ended with Pingel gliding into Manston and having a nice chat with RAF intelligence after.
