Polish air carrier LOT faces delicate choice

Came across this article here

WARSAW: When Poland’s national air carrier, Lot, starts shopping for new aircraft, it will face one of the toughest decisions in its 75-year history: whether to buy European or American. The choice is no mere business matter, for whatever Lot decides, it is likely to leave Poland hostage to accusations that it has betrayed an ally.

Tenders for new planes, which are being drawn up by the Polish government and could be issued early next year, have already attracted the attention of European Union countries. EU diplomats in Warsaw are seeking ways to lobby for Airbus, the European consortium, which is competing for the orders with Boeing.

That’s odd. Air Canada signed a deal with Embraer in the 3rd quarter of 2004 for 45 EMB-190’s with 45 additional options. Why would they buy another 45 non-compatible aircraft from Bombardier?

I thought the new bomber had been cancelled (AGAIN) because it would be more expensive than expected.

Bombardier lands $1.5 billion in loan guarantees

Bombardier Inc. officially received $1.5 billion in loan guarantees from Industry Canada yesterday to sell up to 45 aircraft to Air Canada – and the Montreal company is in line to receive from Ottawa another $700 million U.S., or about $856 million, by Christmas to develop its proposed CSeries family of larger jets.

Does this mean Embraer will be filing a complaint at the WTO against Bombardier for illegal subsidies?
