Polish Aviation Museum

Has anyone been to the Polish Aviation Museum near Krakow? If so, what is it like and is it easy to get to by bus or tram? I’m planning a trip to Krakow and would like to see this museum.

Take a taxi very cheap and I asked one of the museum staff about return to town taxi and they phoned and got one to come for me.

I went about 10 years ago.

Used a taxi from the centre of town with a bit of paper with the address typed on it for the driver. It cost about a pound.
For the return I just walked back to the main road and headed back towards the centre until I found a taxi rank and asked for the centre. (zentrum)

I seem to remember that you buy the tram tickets from the newspaper/tobacconists stalls on the main roads.

Or from the machines located at some of the major stops, which also work in English.

Hi comet,

The museum is fairly close to the centre of town and I visited it about 3 years ago. Well worth half a day of anyone’s time – I was even lucky with the weather. There is a large outdoor display as well as several hangars to visit. I’ve attached several pics of Mig alley. Click on the thumbnails for bigger pictures.
I took a taxi there from my hotel and caught a tram back to the centre of town. Be warned, when I visited, you were expected to have a tram ticket before boarding. As I couldn’t converse with anyone at the tram stop, this was a bit of a problem.

Yup, that’s where you can park your car. 🙂

Thanks for the replies, I definitely hope to get there as I have only ever seen one MiG aircraft, that was the MiG15 at Hendon (now at Cosford I think). I would love to visit a museum which had a range of Soviet-era aircraft.

The main reason I went was to see the gliders but was also well impressed by the other exhibits.

Well worth it if only for the collection of gliders, which you don’t often see in a national museum. Also several of the early Russian jet fighters and as Halcyon Days has said the “Mig Alley” is just amazing. There must be half of the old Polish Air Force lined up and it does make you think what would have happened if the Cold War had gone “Hot” when you consider there were all the other Warsaw pact countries with a similar line-up..

Yes, as already mentioned, we took the tram, but got off too early so had a slightly longer walk.
There is a DC3 wing mounted vertically near the road , but partially hidden by trees, so could be a bit of a signpost.
Not difficult to find as I recall, to the north west of the city centre.

I went last year but we drove ourselves and on site parking is easy. Its very central to Krakow and would be a short taxi ride or tram ride from anywhere central to the city and about a 20 min drive from Krakow airport.
Its a fantastic day out and its an amazing collection “Mig alley” is a sight for sore eyes-with maybe 20 or more various Migs lined up together.

Google street view suggests it is a number four tram. Google hasn’t sequenced the public transport facilities for Krakow, unfortunately.

Yes

I have been to the museum a few years back. I went by tram from the town centre but I can’t remember the tram number. There is a tram stop about 250 metres past the road the museum is on and the museum is about a further 250 metres up the road. Its definitely worth a visit. You might get the directions of Tripadvisor.
