A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.
Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.
Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.
They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviets killed thousands of Poles.
The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).
Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said it had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk, but had no details on the identities of those killed.
Smolensk regional governor Sergei Antufiev told Russian TV that no-one had survived.
“It clipped the tops of the trees, crashed down and broke into pieces. There were no survivors,” he was quoted as saying.
The Polish Foreign Ministry said the president and his wife were aboard the plane.
Central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also said to have been on board.

We the patient will wait until the official report comes out. If anyone else wants a full unofficial report right now, I know a good forum. :diablo:

Will they have to make it available to the enquiry?

Don’t forget the third ‘black box’ that the Polish have in their possession!;)

So, that should put the matter to rest although I have no doubt that there will be people who remain unconvinced, without a shred of evidence to support their position.

Russian investigators said today the black box retrieved from Saturday’s devastating plane crash that killed Poland’s president, Lech Kaczynski, did not provide any evidence that the pilots had been pressured to land.

This is indeed a terrible tragedy and I pass on my deep sorrows and thoughts to all involved. RIP.
Having met the pilot Arkadiusz Protasiuk, a Captain, a few years ago and seeing how he went about his business, I find it very difficult to believe that he conducted himself in any kind of manner to deliberatley put both his and his fellow travellers at risk, through his own volition.
I did go inside this aircraft which was immacculate both inside and out and although offered by the CO of the 36th SPLT, was not at the time in a position to accept a short flight in it.
I think that everybody should allow the investigations to take their course before ‘armchair conclusions’ which at the end of the day all scenarios will be covered by everybody on here that’ll mean somebody or bits of many peoples theories will be correct…..we just don’t know what or how much at this time.

I take your point but nevertheless it is still purely conjecture and I would have thought it best to leave it where it is. Since all the parties are dead and unless there is any evidence on the CVR we will never know.

It mentions the previous incident where the Polish president tried to put pressure on the pilot to land when the pilot did not want to, an event that I was not really aware of.
There is an AAIB report mentioned over on the GA forum where a Comanche crashed in Sussex in bad weather and the analysis was that the pilot was subject to ‘get-there-itis’.
The Guardian article (one of a number it has carried) would tend to suggest that a similar attitude was at work here which is a more reasoned argument than some of the conspiracy notions printed above.

How does this piece from the Grauniad add anything to either this thread or the incident itself?

May I reminds you to please stay on topic and stay away from entertaining ‘conspiracy rumors’ on this thread, you have General Discussion to cater for ‘those’ kind of discussions.
thank you.

Time is probably up for plenty of rumors in the days and weeks to come, but I suppose that we just have to wait and se what the CVR will say about this subject.
I read in a Norwegian newspaper that President Kaczynski called a pilot that refused to land in difficult weather in Tbilisi sometimes in 2008 a coward and had him removed after their return to Poland.
However if it is true I have unfortunately know knowledge about.

The German press is reporting that the President ordered the pilot to land and he was on his fourth attempt. Hopefully the CVR will be able to prove this supposition. Apparently, the President has/had a reputation for being authoritarian with his pilots.:(
Or is the German press stirring foul rumour? There was little love lost between the German left and the Kaczinski brothers. When they were President and Prime Minister they were known in Germany by the left-wing press as the “potato heads”.

While I hope there is no conspiracy, it’s easy to see why many would think there is. Very sad day for the Poles.
Conspiracy or foul play of some sort has more than crossed my mind, I must confess.
That isn’t to lessen the terrible tragedy, though.

You drew the wrong inference from my post. I meant should we be surprised that people are talking conspriacy theories – they are as inevitable as night following day. People love them!
It was an appalling accident and we will know whether or not it was due to piklot error in due course.

im not, the whole thing is a bit fishy to be honest

Couple of Poles here at work are talking conspiracy theories already!
