Popham anyone ?

Anybody going to Popham Aerojumble/fly-in next Monday, and fancy an informal & impromptu meet up ?

I think ‘buccsociety’ and ‘MarkG’ will be there, plus possibly ‘HMSVulture’ and of course ‘Rocketeer’, anyone else ?

Popham was fine for me as I cleared out some dross, bought a few more pilots notes to add to my extensive collection. As Melvyn says, the heady days of Yeovilton are long gone (the days when I bought a seat for my Hurri for £15!!). The odd bargain can still be had. Wish I’d taken my camera. Saw Melvyn but couldn’t get too close due to 1000s of autograph hunters!! Highlights for me were the Prentice and Miles and my daughters locking the keys in the boot!!!

Rocketeer,

I’ve sent you a PM regarding the subject of our conversation.

Can you check your in box and get back to me please ? 😀

Thanks for the mentions about the Dearwings. Consul, you should have come and said hello. I was the fat git with the Rearwin! I also had a table in the marquee and was raising money for fuel.

The aerojumble is only ever going to be as ‘good’ as the parts that traders bring, it is hardly Popham’s fault that this is diminishing. Most of the parts that people from this forum are after have been out of service for decades and availability is going to get less. The first aerojumble I went to was at Yeovilton in about 1984 and there was some great stuff there but that was 21 years ago and since then a lot of the good stuff has been snapped up. This is what prompted my comment last year that “what do you expect? Flat Pack Sea Furies?”

I had a couple of instruments but they attacked zero interest.

Rearwin delight

For me the most enjoyable part of the day was the chance to see a certain immaculate Rearwin put through its paces – I’m sure those generous fuselage sides and tail prove a challenge in certain cross-wind conditions when turning onto the runway! The standard of its restoration is EXCELLENT – well done Melvyn. I did say hello to one forum member (Robbo?) but I’ve not had the pleasure of knowingly meeting others.

Found a nice centre console instrument panel for a Vickers Varsity which will sit nicely with my P1 and P2 instrument panels, so the trip for me was worthwhile. However I couldn’t help noticing that the aerojumble side is diminishing slighty each year. Also enjoyed looking and walking inisde the AN2.

So apart from myself, ‘HMS Vulture’, ‘Rocketeer’ and ‘Buccsociety’, did anyone else go ?

And if you did, what happened to meeting up ?? 🙁

Perhaps because the event has turned into a giant car show and autojumble, nobody bothered ?

And perhaps thats why even Flypast weren’t there and the majority of the marquee vendors are now arts/crafts and local charitys.

Thoughts please anyone………?

Hi DaveT
was there and thoroughly enjoyed the day, even though I was side-tracked at the vital hour and missed the meet-up…SORRY!!!!!
eventually spent much of day on patio area outside club-house,
was good, but like you say Flypast sorely missed

Before you go to Popham, what was Whithwick like last weekend?

Cees

It was ok, sold some stuff to get some dosh in for the projects. Buying wise, I missed a cheap reflector sight (boxed £60) and some nice APs, but bought one or two nice pieces.

Popham hopefully will be good/fun. There are lots of other things to see and do, and of course it does not involve such a long drive!

Ok, everyone at 12.30 outside the front marquee entrance then (not the rear flap tradesmans exit !) ?

Or failing that, Rocketeers bric-a-brac stall throughout the day (only joking TD) !!

When u c it Dave u will realise how right you are!

After my eventful weekend, I can confirm that I will be attending Popham on Monday, so I will give you a call once I am on site Dave.
Looking forwards to meeting some of you.
