POPHAM .. Derelict airframes ???

Hi all,

I went to the Popham aerojumble for the second year, and noticed that a few planes on the flight line,, hadnt moved since the previous year

one of them was missing a engine ( navaho/warrior) .. what is the story behind these airframes, and when did they first seem to become erm… derelict for want of a better word ??..

Yes the Field Master is still at Sandown..

We have a Robin ATL F-GGHH derelct at Wing Farm. Owner seems to have abondoned it. Makes the place look really untidy.

Regards
Mark

Allegedly the L-39 is involved in a divorce case which probably accounts for the high price being asked.

If its not careful the L-39 Albatross parked near the western end of Duxfords runway will soon be taking root. It was moved there at the beginning of legends last year and has’nt moved since.
Seems a shame for what is/was a potential flyer, although as i understand it the asking price is rather ‘optimistic’.

It does seem that airfields/airports tend to gather their share of basket cases. Kidlington has/had a Robin DR400 sat around outside hangar 1 for years it then moved to the grass parking and the last I saw of it the grass was bending over against the underside of the wing. The story was that the owner was making up her mind what to do with it. How long does it take to decide to either sell it or have the work done that it needs to render it airworthy? The trouble was that apart from needing a good clean and the engine having sat idle for about 5 years there really didn’t appear to be much wrong with it.

and just seen that Mooney… Now that IS sad.. poor old girl.

NAM’s current Guide Book has a picture of its Mooney M20A – G-APVV (N8164E) fuselage lying on its side in what appears to be a wood yard!

A-APVV was the first Mooney M20A in the UK and was delivered to Luton in July 1959 in a Constellation!

It wings are currently undergoing deep restoration inside one of NAM’s ‘trailer stores’.

Pre-M25 the most interesting debate was which route to use to take it north?

Dartford (Blackwall ) Tunnel and risk getting stuck – like it did on the way to Biggin from Norfolk! 😮

Or on the Woolwich Ferry!!

The lorry driver and I selected the ferry!! 😉

A de Havilland Heron, G-ANXB languished in the blast pens at Biggin Hill for several years until Newark Air Museum rescued it in 1981.

More interesting was the recovery of spares for the said airframe from St Lucia!! 😀

Glad they saved the Heron, thats one classy old lady worth sprucing up 😉

Hmm,

theres me flight sim then 😀 … LOL.. i love the early40s, 50s, 60s types, the days of seeing them rotting on a airfield are long gone ..

I wonder how many others are out there that are “un-economical for repair, and due to being sat undisturbed for many a year have now severe corrosion problems ??

G-Info ,,. hmm sounds like a interesting site, i will look it up 🙂

here she is G-BSTV .. and a good year… 1967 ..

Then there was the pile of semi derelict airframes at Biggin in the 70s, including a very early Beagle 206 G-ASMK

I note that G-INFO says that G-BSTV was deregistered this month. I think it lay at Popham for some time minus one of its wings.

I haven’t been to Popham for a couple of years now, is the Mini Coupe G-BPDJ still stored round the back?

You should see Farley Farm in Hampshire for derelict airframes. To be fair, it is home for an established maintenance organization, so many of these will have new life breathed into them, when money permits.

I was after a canopy from a bare naked fuselage (AA.5), ‘Oh no, that will be rebuilt!’ 🙂

Chris,

Do you mean Cherokee G-BSTV ? It’s been on that spot for years and G-INFO says it registered to a guy in Taunton. I wonder if he has to pay to keep it there ?

G-INFO database

Photo’s of G-BSTV
