Possibility of flights from LBA to India?

People, just wanted to ask (with the runway work in mind) can Leeds Bradford airport handle direct/indirect flights to India, I ask this because I do feel their to be a sizeable market in the Yorkshire area for enough interest, my parents are going to India in February from MAN via Doha with Qatar Airways, ironically we just found out there are 11 other people we now from Leeds who will be on the same flight 🙂

I doubt we will ever see TCX or FCA set base at LBA, most i see is a few W’s thats it. If we are ever to get a 3rd based charter aircraft i would put money on another AEU machine.

I want another charter airline based at LBA, surely TCX or FCA.

It won’t happen. These airlines have left BHX because of runway constraints (and moved their aircraft to EMA), so are hardly likely to move into an airport such as LBA. They don’t just serve Orlando, and the charter market is trend based, which means the airlines need the flexibility to swap between short and longer long haul routes. If a runway cannot offer that flexibility then they won’t deliver services.

Some needed routes are Orlando and New York for definate, and i think low cost transatlantic is a must, you seen the likes of AA’s and Virgins prices.

There are multiple factors at play for long haul routes, not least the individual airlines’ own operating manuals, which are often more restrictive than the field lengths given by the manufacturer. This is why at some airports you can flights from neighbouring countries by their respective airlines, one with smaller aircraft even though both airlines operate similar equipment. The choice of one to use a runway does not guarantee that the second will do so.

In addition there are elements to consider such as load factors, potential yield and cultural differences. For example, many travellers flying between the UK and Pakistan have extremely heavy baggage, which must be accounted for when loking at the operating requirements. With respect to yield, this depends on whether the airline needs to carry cargo to make the route viable. If the local market is extremely strong and can support the service through higher fares then there may be no need to carry cargo, thus allowing the airline to operate from a shorter runway because the payload is lower. However, if (as is the case for most UK regional airports) the local market cannot support the route through higher fares then the airline will want to carry cargo, and this can often have a dramatic difference to the ability of a relatively short runway to support the route.

Bear in mind also that for many years transatlantic charter services have stopped to refuel on route when operating from short regional runways, although to most people this is never obvious as it is purely a tech-stop and rarely publicly discussed. In addition there are a number of scheduled airlines that have shown they may be willing to provide a stop in Europe to go long haul from regional UK airports, although the trend is moving away from this as it makes route marketing difficult.

My experience recently would suggest that with current runway lengths the major airlines of Pakista and India would not be keen on direct services, and whoever said NCL could handle such non-stops made me laugh so much I’m sat in a puddle of tears (of laughter) :diablo: There is a reason that LBA has safeguarded land for runway extensions in their masterplan ;). From what I know though the market should not be written off completely, but may need a different airline to fly it.

Would’nt it be nice if LBA did get all these new Long Haul Destinations that have been roumored of late.

Orlando,& Toronto on Thomas Cook, Boeing 757-200 or its bigger brother the Boeing 757-300. While Gambia and Egypt to be served with the based Astraeus Boeing 737-700. And not fogetting India to be operated by the new Swe-fly/Spicejet.com operation.

All this and a direct German service from LBA by Jet2.com or any other airline who wants to do it, Would make my 2006 a dream year.

Would be excellent news if true, though I still think it is unlikely. the 180 odd seat 757 surely would have no problem doing Orlando/Toronto direct.

Hi

Just found out who is roumored to be starting long haul transatlantic Charter services from Leeds/Bradford Airport. Thomas Cook Holidays are said to be looking at Starting flights from the Summer 2007 season. At the moment sounds like both Orlando (USA) and Toronto (Canada) to be each operated Fourtnightly by the Thomas Cook airlines own Boeing 757’s.

Can anyone comfirm this is it?? Cause i’m not 100% as yet. Just look at what i got told last year (FCA looking at Baseing aircraft at LBA) And we all know what happened. Knothing.

Hi all

There is one airline talking to LBA at the moment about the Possibility of starting a once weekly service to India Spicejet.com. Flights would be operating via Stockholm again and by that swedish airline swe-fly.

Also there is a lot a talk about a new Trans Atlantic Charter service into North America. And No i don’t mean New York by the way.

Don’t see that one lasting 😮

Correct PMN.

LBA – YYZ

At the moment 2 Operators are said to be intrested in operating this route. Both would be using the same weekly flight. Air Transat and Globespan Holidays are not the intrested parties as well, Becasue they don’t want to bring their Large Airbus A310 or the A330’s to Leeds.

They don’t want to bring their ‘large’ A310 into Leeds? Interesting as the 310 is a baby in the world of widebodies. Perhaps TS should invest in a 757 or two:)

14 departures have no obsticle issues, however 32 does with the chevin. Everyone moans and groans about Ruwnway length, however the single engine climb profile off 32 is the major factor, not the Rwy length as such.

The Chevin is a problem on either 32 or 14 if I remember rightly, I dont know why the height affects BRS less. We’d need someone like Moondance on here to explain fully!

So why does the height not affect Bristol at 40ft less (622ft)?
The landing distances are not a big issue except for Cat3 + tailwind on 32.
I remember EA once stating at a presentation when the subject of flights to Pakistan was raised. He said the airport had spoken with Airbus and it was said that direct flights were technically possible with an A330.
In this case for such a flight duration the 757/767 should have no problems.
