Last time i was inside a DC2 was when they did some filming at Duxford. We use the Russavia Rapide. It was in the early 1980’s. They where making a film about the race.

thats because she IS lovely!
Be nice to get the DC2 over from Holland and 3 comets – who would have thought it possible?
You won’t me arguing with that.
You can never have too many Douglas twins in my opinion.

Three flew in the race, two were built afterwards.
G-ACSS looked rather lovely in the hangar this afternoon.

I thought 5 were built? That makes it easier to recreate then! I know my Uncle was at a big event at Mildenhall in 34, so chances are that was the one.
Five were built but only three for the race.
The other two came along a bit later.
I reckon the true star of the race was the KLM DC-2.
Illustrates how far Britain had fallen behind in the design of modern commercial aeroplanes at that point.

So thats an eventual total of 5?
USA
Flying Replica
UK
Original under restoration
“Original” under “reconstruction”
Replica under construction
NZ
Replica under construction
I would tend to agree with David Burke that historically significant aircraft such as Grosvenor House should be preserved and not operated due to the increased risk of loss, but of course thats an issue for the owners.
I do wonder however if the “other two” eventually go into active operation in the UK that the Trust might reconsider ongoing operation of the original, even though static airframes is not in its remit.
If its ever grounded Australia would be more than happy to receive it along the lines of NZ and the Gull smiles.

My Uncle witnessed 5 DH88 comets together – but he was too young to appreciate it. He was only 3 at Mildenhall in 1934!
He did very well then. There were only three of them there.
