Possibly Ju 52

Postman brought this today.

Supposed to be part of a hatch from the port side of a Ju 52. (one of the two below the cockpit.)

The photos on the net are confusing because of Toucans and Casa’s and my book on Ju 52’s doesn’t have this level of detail.

However, none of the Ju 52 hatches I can see have the reinforcing band and there is no place for the hinge or catch on this piece.

Result – I can’t definitively place it.

No markings or stamps found so far.

Anyone know where this piece may have been used?

In its remaining shape it is about 40 cm x 40 cm.

The main corrugated aircraft sections I am aware of are – the wings above the fuel tanks of a P38, the wings of a B17 – the wings of the Whitley and the Ju52.

The wing section I had before from a B17 had a rounder profile and was heavier.

The square profile is more (I think) like that of the Whitley. I am sure Elliot will confirm.

P.S. rivet holes are 4 and 2.5 mm dia.

No it is Aluminium – the weight, feel and noise are quite unmistakeable. The gold colour is normal in German pieces – anodising I assume.

If you look closely you can see the blue powder on some of the edges- which is the aluminium decomposition salt.

Your bits look as if they are made from steel, that’s rusted. I’m pretty sure Ju.52’s were aluminium corrugations, which corrode to a white powder. Sure they aren’t bits of an old Citroen van? 😉
