Can anyone provide info regarding immediate post war camouflage on RAF transport aircraft, such as the Halifax CVIII?
Is Extra Dark Sea Grey/Dark Slate Grey correct for the upper surfaces? This combination seems wrong in relation to the few (albeit black and white) contemporary shots I’ve seen. The combination seems to lack sufficient contrast.
I’m confident Azure Blue is the correct lower surface colour.
Hope someone can help.
With thanks.

Nice link and very good pics timwing.
It has always intrigued me to see the Polish flag on the nose of aircraft painted in ‘normal’ and ‘flipped’ versions. Going through the pics one can notice the flag painted with a red square either at the top right or top left.
Anyone can put a reason to this anomaly?
Most likely they didn’t know the proper positioning.

There is a colour photo around of a Stirling which also casts doubt that the official colours were used, in that the grey looks very light and the green appears closer to Dark Green than Dark Slate Grey. However I don’t think that there is any final word on the matter.
Wasn’t that one in India, and the EDSG is very chalked?

Talking of RAF Transport aircraft.. There is a Gulfstream at VanNuys that has a RAF Transport Command white/grey/blue stripe paint job on it 🙂

Thanks for that.
Re – that type of film – orthochromatic? i’d forgotten it recorded all sorts of colours oddly in b/w.
So Extra Dark Sea Grey, Dark Slate Grey and Azure Blue it is.

The Stirling V used in India in 1946 were in the finish you mentioned. The contrast could be due to the type of camera film used. No 301 Squadron used Halifax in 1946 in a very worn finish http://www.polishairforce.pl/dyw301zdj.html scroll down to the bottom of the page for that era .
