Post war RCAF Lancaster Markings

Hi all

I’m sure that someone out there may be able to help me. A colleague of mine is making a model of Lanc FM104 c1950s. The kit itself has a red cheatline whereas a corresponding aftermarket decal sheet has a blue one. Obviously he now has a dilemma over which to apply and the net and reference books have not been able to help.

If anyone can provide a definitive answer it would be much appreciated

cheers

John

I’ve got the RAF Coastal Command one and going to transfer the relevant mods over to the Revell kit, more correct and a third of the price!
I guess there are more extra bits in the RCAF kit though.

Better not mention the mistakes on the kit itself then!

Hi K225

My colleague is happy now:D

We had an inkling it was blue through looking at B&W contrasts, but this confirms it

cheers

John

But he’ll still need to add RESCUE to the underside on the bomb doors. 😀

You will also notice the cheatline doesn’t extend past the waist band. The decal sheet shows it going to the tail.

I love the RCAF Lanc Rescue scheme and the other 50-60s RCAF paint designs (C-45, B-25, C-47, P-51 with red tips, etc.)
Good to see someone is making a kit/decals for it.

Like I say, always worth probing the actual aircraft background a bit, easy to fall for what is generally correct but exceptions are always out there.
It would be a bit odd to offer replacement decals that are completely wrong.

This photo of 213 at Torbay shows the blue cheatline.

I think that this where the problem lies, you’d assume that both manufacturers would have done their homework, but mistakes in markings do happen. The box art/decal may show one thing but is it necessarily correct.

It would seem odd though that Xtradecal would change from the well known correct scheme in the box to what would appear to be an incorrect scheme. Might be worth some research to see if a special scheme was applied to this Lancaster at some time

John,

Alas Xtradecal aren’t infalable. Hasegawa have it as red/daglo in their kit, which i suspect is correct. By 1961 FM104 had its scheme changed to the more common upper white fuselage with red/white/red broader stripes.

Xtradecal also missed the fact the word ‘RESCUE’ is written in large letters on the bomb doors, thus….

The paint scheme for the Xtradecal kit is here

http://www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=X72062

As can be seen the cheatline is a thin blue one. The kit has it as red.

Thanks for the photo links but these show a later scheme

Generally speaking the RCAF used a red stepped and pointed cheatline, with another white line in the middle of it. This was used on most of their large aircraft (Lancaster, Neptune, Argus, Aurora, C-119, C-130 etc) well into the ’80s.

There is a link to some nice colour RCAF Lanc pics here http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/album/data/601/medium/34149a445604e5204103d35d17e78e35.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/album/showphoto.php%3Fphoto%3D11420%26cat%3Dall%26si%3DLancaster&usg=__yFDT0-FPupzKBRNRNkIPWZC-Luw=&h=486&w=600&sz=50&hl=en&start=38&tbnid=u7peyFhf4r9ekM:&tbnh=109&tbnw=135&prev=/images%3Fq%3Drcaf%2Blancaster%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D20%26um%3D1&um=1
