RE: Post your country national monument here.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-09-02 AT 06:14 AM (GMT)]Having being stationed there shortly ,, Few memorial in Serbia can compare to series of monuments in city of Kragujevac, where on 21/21 October 41, Germans executed between 3 and 8 thousand serbs. The tru number is still debated.. to date 2500 victoms have been named, and court in Nuremburg used 7000 number in their trials.

The massacre hapend in the aftermath of general Breme’s order that for every 1 soldier germans lost 100 civilians will be shot.
The following are series of monuments raised to remember one of the worst massacres of ww2.

1. The Monument to students and profesors.. When Germans coulnt find enough civilians they went into local highschool and marched the students out… the profesors were given chance to stay but non did.
The monument resembles roman 5 and normal 3 number.. symbolising the class 3 of year 5. the first group to be shot.

2.Monument of Pain. dedicated to women of massacre
3.The Stone Sleaper. for the local villagers
4. Chrystal flower . for the children
5. “100 for 1” memory of the ratio of general breme
6. Monument of Freedom
7. The actual museum bldg.

there are many more .. anybody who get the chance should wisit the place. Its a beautifull city.

RE: Post your country national monument here.

We’re do you come up with these kind of subjects, but anyway here it is. It is the monument of the De Dam square in Amsterdam Holland. It is in memory of those who have fallen during a conflict after WWII began, for civilians and combatants alike.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-08-02 AT 08:54 AM (GMT)]Ok .

Here it is ,surely as famous as the Eiffel tower.

the “arc de triomphe” has been build by Napoleon. Under the arch is the grave of the “unknown soldier” a guy randomly select at the end of WWI. Every celebration takes place here such as July 14 (National day) , Nov 11 (End of WWI) or May 8 (End of WWI)

Yes Benjamin, the last was used for extremist purposes also, and therefore, I don’t think it represents Belgium… Go asr around here (Liège / Luik) what they think about that monument. I’m sure they would tell you to put C4 on it… 😉

RE: Post your country national monument here.

In Belgium it is the Atomium, build in 1958 for the “World convention”. It looks rather old these days, but plans are made to modernise this amazing looking structure.

But there are ofcourse more “symbols” of Belgium, like the Cathedral in Antwerp, my favourite place (not the cathedral but the little cafés around).

The last picture is the “Ijzertoren”, symbol of the Flemish identity, though these days also used by extreme right which is a shame.
