Interesting pic, was this Firefly testing the aerodynamic shape of the larger A.S.7 type rear canopy arrangement?

The remains of WB271 were sent for scrapping last year on conclusion of the Board of Inquiry.

Thanks for that Lee.. also do you know if the airframe was stripped of parts/ancilliaries before scrapping, or is it still naval policy not to re-use parts from crashed airframes.?

As far as i’m aware they are still held in storage, although someone like Lee Howard would probably know more.

My ex-boss and mentor in Melbourne years ago was with 1770 Squadron in Fireflies, Arthur was an observer and squadron photographic officer on board HMS Indefatigable.

He has a lot of original photos from his time with the squadron in the Nth Sea/attack on the Tirpitz and then with the RN Pacific Fleet.

Arthur gave me his observers wings, cap badge and a photo of him standing in front of a Firefly, I’m still in contact with him and will see if his daughter can scan some photos for us.

Somebody asked if there was a picture of Bob Diemerts Firefly. here it is, Merlin engine, 6 seats and all.

I heard that on the Dutch Island of Curacao two MLD Fireflies collided mid-air and crashed. The substantial remains of both are said to be still lying on private land with one of the tailsections having been transported to the Netherlands (having seen a pic of it somewhere). It is said that the remains are to be used to provide parts for the ex Swedish Firefly target tug that was swapped for the Aviodrome Spitfire IX, now with HFL at Duxford.

Here’s an interesting Fairey Firefly. This is one of four Australian Mk V’s that were locally converted to two seat trainers. Fairey Aviation in Australia used the conversion kit for the earlier Marks as a basis for the modification.

Just a few more of CWHM’s beautiful Firefly on a quiet Friday afternoon last June at the museum 🙂

4th March 1973 – A significant date.

CPO Ron Gourlay of the RN Historic Flight was accompanying the Firefly at the Fairey commemoration at LHR. He mentioned in passing to a chum of mine who worked for BAA that he had recently spotted a couple of Seafire wrecks in a scrap yard in Warrington whilst looking for Firefly parts.

“Light blue touch paper and stand clear”…SX300 & SX336. 🙂
