Pre Digital Aircraft Photos

Following a comment in the ‘Miscellaneous Duxford 80’s-90’s’ thread about old ‘real photographs’ rather than digital, here’s a selection of my older photos. Some of these were 35mm, others smaller compact film cameras such as the pocket disc cameras with 10mm negs! Apart from one, they date between the 1970’s, up to around 2000 on my Honeymoon in the USA.

All have been cleaned up to a great extent, removing dust and scratches, many taking about an hour per picture. I am still looking through old albums for additional pictures.

Here’s the first few……

B-18 Bolo at Castle AFB Museum

The Battle at Duxford around 1989 I think

Boeing Field

Fuzzy, but a fantastic sight at RAF Leuchars

This one dates from the 1950’s. RNAF Sunderland taken from the bridge of my dad’s ship

Flycatcher, perhaps at Old Warden, mid 1980’s??

Sea Fury with a familiar looking spinner!

Gladiator, back when there was only one.

The second B-25 is the DBAF’s example. At that point it carried only a basic olive drab/grey RAF scheme and was marked NO-V / HD346. In early 1994 invasion stripes were added so this photo was taken before then.

The TFC’s B-25 and another Mitchell, ‘though I can’t recall the year. I’m guessing early 1990’s.

The second Blenheim restoration – unknown year.

A couple of C-46’s from my Honeymoon trip in 2000.

Andover and Chipmunks from the Sunderland Airshow 1973, back when the airshow had plenty of content and an airfield to fly from!!

Moving forwards to 1984 or ’85, B-17 Sally B in the recently applied olive drab and yellow 447th BG markings. I think that’s the wing tip of one of the North Weald Harvard team.

The scheme didn’t last long and was replaced by the “Memphis Belle” scheme in 1989. For a couple more years, the chin turret was left off and Sally B is seen here in 1990 without the turret.

Looking through old photo albums and came across these, that I haven’t ‘digitised’, I assume from RIAT in the early 1990s. They were put in an album with photos from other displays – with no comments I’m afraid !
Seems very strange to think of these as pre-digital as, at the time, they seemed very up to date !
They are scanned from prints not negatives and, without darkening down too much, don’t look quite as dark and menacing as they seemed at the time !

The Huskie helicopter brings back some memories.

Oxford airport has played host to very few air shows but there was one held there in September 1967. Nearby RAF Upper Heyford sent their Karman Huskie and neighbour RAF Abingdon sent Blackburn Beverley XB267. The Gladiator 1 from the Shuttleworth Collection also particiated.

F-104 at the Boeing Museum of Flight.

F-104 at Castle AFBM.

F-105 Thunderchief at Castle AFBM.

Great photos thank you. I suppose I wouldn’t have seen much in the way of arliners, or much of anything, flying over Long Eaton, until the move to Castle Donington. Friend Brian who I go to Duxford Legends with lived at Bulwell when he was young, Bulwell being next to Hucknall he would have seen(and heard !) lots of interesting stuff ! The only Hucknall related aircraft I ever noticed flying over was the VC10 with an RB211 on one side and it’s two remaining Conways on the other.

I can remember hearing British Midland Airways Argonauts droning over Long Eaton when I lived at home. Not sure if I realised they were Merlins ? Must have done as I’m sure I would have checked all the details in my Observers books !
Just searching on the internet, I didn’t realise Argonauts were flown under the Derby Airways banner so assume would have been flown out of Burnaston before everything moved to East Midlands.

Last surviving Argonaut G-ALHJ when in use with BOAC apprentices, what a shame it did not make it into the great collection at Duxford.

Just adding the one photo this time, but one I remember being chuffed at getting. Klu F27 in 75th anniversary livery, Mildenhall 1988. Taken through the spectators in front due to the altitude of the pass – or is it on take off ? Perhaps should be in ‘how low can you go’ ?

Our trip was planned around aircraft museums and National Parks. Lynne was only 23, so too young to go on the hire car insurance, so I did all the driving, doing over 6000 miles in three weeks around nine States!!

Interesting to read you took your new wife to visit an aeroplane museum whilst on honeymoon, Stephen. Maybe she shares your interest in things aviation related.

Back in the 80s during a holiday on The Gower I took the family to an Air Day at RAF Brawdy, I thought the display with lots of international participation was great… but the ladies didn’t agree and would have much preferred to spend a sunny day on the beach!

This Gannet AEW.3 was based at Brawdy at the time the picture was taken and is seen here at RAF Benson during the Battle of Britain airshow in September 1969.

I like the JP formation. Quite appropriate 50 years on.

B-47 at Castle AFB Museum, seen in June 2000 on my honeymoon.

F-84, can’t recall where from.

F-86, I think at Planes of Fame, July 2000.

F-101 at Castle AFB Museum, seen in June 2000.

More Jet Provost images.

In fact a JP twice flew overhead here in south Oxfordshire this afternoon, thought I’d got caught in a timewarp!
