pre WW2 flying boat hulls

Jonathan Cowley posted thumbnail pics of 2 hulls converted into house boats, Atalanta & Southampton.
Posting date Feb 2009.
I’ve exhausted my research threads with negative results.
Would Jonathan let my know where these hulls are located?
I didn’t get anything from Virgin or Bawdsey Ferry.
Thk you,
Writerguy

Apologies for the double thread. I’ve mostly chopped to the original main thread! NEEMA-would you be able to email me at all, I would be delighted to hear more about your recollections of the flyingboats at Felixstowe Ferry. (swordfish200@aol.com).

If there were any moderators now active on this forum, they might merge the two parallel threads on this topic. But these days, I won’t hold my breath whilst waiting!

my email therein, I’d be very keen to hear from anyone direct. Apparently need to do some more posts before I can access private messaging on here!

Good evening all. I have been researching the topic of the flyingboat hulls used at Felixstowe Ferry for some time and would be delighted to get into contact with some of you to share research. Just trying to work out how the messenger function works!   Below are a couple of images of the Vickers Valentia and what I believe to be a Felixstowe F2A at Felixstowe Ferry.

Hulls

As a young boy, with my father, we came across the two hulls at Felixtowe ferry around 1959/60. We chatted up the family holidaying in the “Atalanta” houseboat ( it had that name plate on it), and went aft inside, where the hull lamination construction could be clearly examined. We didn’t get inside the Southhampton ,but took some photos These were later circulated among the then historic aviation community ( Jack Bruce etc.) and I like to think that this awareness helped contribute toward the later RAFM preservation project for the “Swampton” . Also in the area at the time ,and afloat, was a catamaran that was clearly constructed from a pair of seaplane floats.

I’d be interested to know if any more information has come to light since my thread on the subject of 7/8 years ago (which reminds me just how long some of us have been ‘misspending’ our time here!).

To be pedantic – both hulls were used as houseboats at Felixstowe Ferry (Bawdsey is on the other side of the river Deben) and both locations are in SUFFOLK.

Thread drift, I know, but it brings to mind the remnants of Supermarine Sea Eagle G-EBGR (incorrectly painted as GS). After WWII the hull passed into the custody of BOAC who failed to take care of it and burnt it at Heston on 13 February 1954 (wonder if it was a Friday?!!) so destroying the oldest relic of a British transport aeroplane.

There’s a chapter on the recovery of the Southampton fusalge from Felixstowe Ferry in Bruce Robertsons’s book “Epics of Aviation Archaeology” – with a good few photos. It was recovered in 1967 iirc.

both were in Essex in the 1960s at Bawdsey.
One went to RAF Museum & was stunningly rebuilt. t’other was too far gone and broken up – I believe
