Hey – I am of an age to remember when, after the Battle of Britain film, Duxford airfield went back on to ‘care and maintenance’ status. I defy anyone to have predicted the developments over the following thirty five years.
If people like Paul Allen get the ‘hots’ for a DH Hornet, there will be a DH Hornet.
I will start a thread – “Predict a typical day ay Duxford 2040”
Be optimistic, even you Digby.

“And such a handsome beast”
I’ll leave it to individual forum readers to decide whether I was referring to the Moggy C ‘Fizog’ or the magnificent lines of the F.Mk 46 Seafire.

Moggy,
I have assumed they will still be working on the ‘Flying A’ MkIII so your choices will be limited. Too many propellers – nah – just the right number to harness the torque for a very old ‘ppl’ and help you keep it on the hard.
And such a handsome beast. 😉

Oh,
Does it have to be? Is that one with far too many prop blades?

Willow,
Might be time for a real ale discussion on the open forum, I’m no longer a CAMRA member so persuade me why I should be !!

Moggy,
The ‘Neil Williams Memorial Seafire’ – wouldn’t be a Mk.46 by any chance?

” Now ladies and gentlemen, if you look to crowd left, that is over the disused motorway, you will be rewarded by the sight of the world’s oldest living Spitfire owner/pilot.”
“Known universally as ‘Moggy’ this venerable 91 year old, acknowledged to be the finest taildragger pilot in the world will be flying his famous Mark IX – ML407, given to him as a token of her undying affection by a lovestruck Carolyn Grace back in 2005”
“Now painted with the Legend “Nick & Carolyn” under the cockpit it is part of a fleet of four that Moggy owns including the rare Mark 1 “Hoof” the clipped wing MkV “Mark” and the Seafire “Neil W”
“His programme will consist of his usual trademark aerobatics with the aircraft being demonstrated in attitudes that no other pilot has ever been able to emulate”
“At the end of the display the aircraft will position back to its base field at Knettishall famed for its 18 full size replica B17s dispersed around the recreated hangars, control tower and buildings”
“The T2 there contains a restoration workshop, currently turing out a newbuild Westland Whirlwind fighter, that will join the Halifax, Hampden, Stirling, Whitley, MB5, Typhoon and Wellington that currently grace the airshow circuit”
“I’m sure you will agree that this next display alone justifies the meagre 2,700 Euro entry fee to TLBUTHIOMCPWINMTBR Duxford”
Moggy
For those who don’t know the name IWM was changed under the first Liberal Government of 2020 by the new Prime Minister, Davina McCall. The new abbreviation stands for ‘The Little Bits of Unpleasantness That Happened In Our Misguided Colonialist Past Which Is Now Much To Be Regretted Museum”

As a CAMRA member, I would have thought ‘Real Ale-lines’ a more appropriate title. Might improve on board service.
Can the Sunderland be in the Willow Annex please. It should just be approaching the end of it’s restoration by then:)

“Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Duxford’s 2040 air display. Unfortunately the local council have decreed that we only have until nine o clock to fly, so sit back and enjoy the next twenty minutes.”

I agree with Philo as I will be 82 as well, so if Duxford is still hosting Airshows of any description, I will probably be watching it as a live broadcast on a TV/PC at home. No traffic or parking hassles!
That’s if I’m still around then!

If I hear ‘Welcome to Duxford 2040’ I will be very happy, as I will be 82.

Fortunately, the decision by the FlyPast Historic Aviation Forum members to gather together as one jolly, single-minded, determined team, to purchase the unfinished aircraft in Hangar 2, way back in 2003, and work together to restore them has meant that that they will all be flying for their 35th year.

and the Forum experts expel an awful lot of hot air as they openly slate the owners decission to do exactly as he wishes with his property. 😀 :p

TFC decide to sell the rare bristol beaufighter, due to the fact the owner at the ripe old age of 102 has given up any hope of seeing her fly in his lifetime, this move follows last years decision to sell the sea fury which waited for over 40 years for its engine.

By 2040 all private flying will have been stopped due to the increase in commercial aviation. Duxford will have two 10,000 concrete runways, dealing with large passenger jets departing from Stansted Airport. The Millennium Dome, that was moved from its London site ten years is open having been renamed the “Doughnut Dome”. It contains fully restored and taxiable examples of most aircraft operated by the RAF, USAF and NATO over the last 130 years.
At the monthly engine running day’s aircraft are drawn from the collection and displayed to the public as follows
9.00am ‘Role Out’ – selected aircraft are removed from the Dome
10.00 – 11.30 Static photos of single aircraft with clear background.
11.30 – 1.00 Static photos of aircraft with period vehicles, ground equipment and personnel.
1.00 – 2.00 Aircraft prepared for ground running.
2.00 – 4.00 Engine start-up and taxiing demo’s.
5.00 Aircraft defuelled and returned to the Dome.
New for the 2040 season are the first exhibits from the recently purchased ‘Monino’ collection, this collection of 150+ Soviet aircraft has been acquired from a guy in East London with a dodgy Russian accent.
All civil aviation exhibits are housed in the “Willow Annex” and are also included in the ground running days. Duxford’s unique location accent to Stansted Airport allows the sight and sound of ‘Doughnut Regional Airways’ fleet of 30 newbuild Concorde’s to be seen departing on their regular flights to Cambridge and other regional destinations. Since the banning of private cars in the 2030’s the M11 is now one of the UK’s busiest cycle paths. It is hoped that by the end of the year the newbuild DH Comet’s will also return to service with ‘Doughnut International Airways’.

It would seem that if Duxford prices were to remain at their current level by the year 2040 they will be around the same as the garage over the road. 😀

~ROFLMAO at Lancman, Kev35, DIGBY and warbirduk~
By 2040, I shall be in charge of Duxford…and Duxford will look like this…
Hanger 1 will house the very best of British war planes from the Bristol Fighter to the Eurofighter Typhoon…(and NONE will be suspended from the ceiling)…
Hangers 2 and 3 will still be home to the airworthy aircraft, including Hendon’s Tiffie, Battle and Defiant…swopped with the Director of Hendon for a Des O’ Conner LP and a bag of chips (seems like a fair deal given Black 6 and others…)
Hanger 4 will house the “Dame Ashley Collection”, featuring my favourite aircraft…all airworthy of course…this will include Spitfires MH434, TD248 and BM597… a Hurricane…the TSR.2…a Lysander…Mosquito…and Hunter…:)
Hanger 5 will house the RAF Memorial Flight which will include 10 Spitfires, 5 Hurricanes, 2 Meteors, 2 Vampires, 2 Hunters and 2 Javellins…the Harrier will not be eligible for inclusion in the Flight as it will still be in service, 80 years after it first joined the front line (well like Kev said, do you really hold much hope of the Eurofighter making it into service before 2040? :p)
The American Air Museum as we know it will have been knocked down and a replica WWII hanger built in it’s place with plenty of room for all the aircraft (again without having to resort to stringing any up from the ceiling)…
The current contents of the Land Warfare Hall will have been emptied out and flogged off…think I’ll bung Concorde in here alongside the Comet and Britannia…
I will buy the field next to the LWH and build a huge complex there to house the civil aircraft collection…so there will be no more whinging about aircraft left outside to rot…
Food and drink at Duxford will be excellent quality and affordable too…
And TFC’s P-51 Princess Elizabeth will finally take to the skies again…
All complete fantasy I know, but hey! :p

“Hey, look at the flying program for today, just downloaded it from DuxNet to my wrist watch for 565 Euros – cheap this year innit? Anyway, sez here the RAF are coming with their Historic Aircraft, be good to see 5 Squadron’s Global Express again. When was the last time it flew? Right, 2031! Still I remember the old days when they had, oooh, all three aircraft in the air at once. And look, the Blenheim’s flying at last! Good one. What else? Right, there’s Grace’s Spit, and Black 6 doing a lo-fast, no, hang on, it’ll be on top of an Eddie Stobart trogging down the 200 yards of runway. Sheesh, I’d love to live in one o’ them houses next to the tower, looking out at all that space. Hang on, late news. Well, seems that the Army’s warbird isn’t coming after all. Thought they’d have sorted their Apache by now. Right, flying’s from 14:00 to 14:10 so I’m back to the motor for a sandwich. Luckily I managed to get a parking place on the M11. See ya.”
