With all the recent discussions on the remains of the Iraqi Furies, I wouldn’t mind if some of these could come to the museums instead. BW Roger

I agree with you that it is looting David, but it is going to happen anyhow. They either destroy all aircraft, or they bring “home” some, and destroy the rest. Can’t see anything else happen.
BW Roger
PS. Do you know if the S-11 is coming to NW this weekend?

Dougnut – we had a completely different attitude fifty years ago because we had just fought a long and bloody war against both countries and the aircraft we acquired (largely for evaluation and not preservation ) were the legitimate ‘spoils of war’.
The IWM at Duxford has a Mig 21 and Hind- from memory both of these were gifts from their respective governments.
The Midland air museum have a Mig-21 as does Boscombe Down.
The Newark air museum has a pair of Mig’s (23 and 27)
whilst still stored from the same batch at Hawarden are some
SU-17’s . As for a SU-22 – well one was sent to Boscombe Down
and now sits on the ranges at Spadeadam and the OFMC have another at Scampton so it does rather beg the question ‘do we need any more ?’
Now unless I am mistaken there are clearly two factors
which tend to negate my desire to see any Iraqi jets brought to the U.K .
No. 1. I cannot recall any notable air combat encounters or indeed
any attacks on U.K forces using these aircraft .
N0.2. The purpose of the war was to ‘liberate’ the Iraqi people
from the regime of Saddam Hussain and negate the threat
to the West from WOMD.
Now the position as I can see it is that Iraq isn’t a marvellous place now! – the WOMD havn’t been found – and Saddam is still at liberty. Unless I am mistaken the Iraqi air force equipment still belong’s to the Iraqi people – so the very prospect of our forces
bringing back any equipment strikes me as looting .

A MiG-25 is something special. A MACH 3 machine like this deserves a place in a museum. Apart from this, it is a rare machine, only one can be found preserved in “the West”. BW Roger

I’m surprised at you David, if people had that attitude fifty years ago we would not have any WW2 German or Japanese aircraft today. I agree that more needs to be done to protect the aircraft we have today, but to ignor enermy aircraft from our more recent conflicts is very short sighted. The IWM only has one example is a Russian ‘cold war’ aircraft, they should make every effort to obtain one or two Iraqi combat jets, the Mig-25 shown above would be good for starters. It always amazes me that apart from a few helicopters and the Mig-23/27 that arrived at Newark via a private importer, that the UK has not received any ‘cold war’ jets from the former Eastern block countries.

The Museum of Flight at East Fortune has a nice example of a Mig 15 on display ( well a Polish Lim -2 to be more accurate ) and has another Mig front fuselage section in store , but I have to agree I would like to see more Cold War aeroplanes on display – especially when there are so many lying around former Warsaw Pact countries doing nothing – there were a few Hind’s and Mig15-17’s passed through the country but none ended up staying here – there were even Hind’s lying up here in Scotland at Cumbernauld Airport

I would love to see a Su-22 used at Duxford as a centre piece about the Warsaw pack and the fall of the berlin wall. Instead they seem obsessed with chopping up historic British aircraft
(Concorde and Shackleton) and reproducing an artists impression by hangar aeroplanes from the roof.

Best place for them, dodgy old jet stuff :p
The Swiss I think have a better idea and park their aircraft in mountains, I think burying aircraft in sand is similar in concept but will play havoc with the aircrafts systems when they try to fly them.
Whilst they were digging about did they happen to find the missing Indian Tempests?
I think I’d still go with a Fury, any suggestions as to what colour I should paint the interior, firewall etc????
