In Leo McKinstry’s book Spitfire Portrait of a Legend, p. 182, there is brief mention of a Spitfire named Unshackled Spirit. Apparently, funds for the Spitfire had been collected by British PoW’s at Oflag VIB, and forwarded to the Swedish Red Cross for onwards transfer to the UK.
Which Spitfire was it? Also, does anyone have a time-frame for the money transfer?

Andy,
Thanks. That narrows it down a bit.

Unshackled Spirit was a Spitfire IX but the Serial No. is unknown.
The time of the trasfer of funds is not stated.
It does state that Sgt Miles-Osborn was in communication with Mr Sandys, the Parlimentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply (Responsible for aircraft production) betwean August and December 1943.
