Following on from the flying Harrier thread, I thought it would be interesting to see how many Harriers have actually made it into museum displays…
Are there any two seat Harriers preserved in museums? The only ‘preserved’ one I know of is the one our university (Coventry) has put a roof over as an instructional airframe. It is a fascinating beast and reaching the lofty perch of the rear cockpit is quite a climb (thank goodness the steps have arrived).
The best looking Harrier has to be the naval two seater (T8  ) in gloss black- hopefully one might make it to Yeovilton for display in the museum, as they will presumably be retired along with the Sea Harrier fleet.
I will dig out some pictures of the Coventry example… 🙂

Hello all and Happy Christmas,
Just picking up on this old thread on Harrier T Birds as my partner, Heather, recently bought this Harrier T4 nose section from ‘IWS’ up near Edinburgh. … now to be known as ‘Heather’s Harrier’.
So, anyone out there got any details of this T Bird other than she came from Roy Jarman to Everett Aero to Ian Sheffield to Heather Graham! ???
Im keen for ANY piece of the jigsaw …. thanks … Fly Safe
Ian had the full history known to date. Did he not provide it at time of sale ?

Two pictures of the Harrier GR.3 preserved in Chile: the first image is of the aircraft on exhibition inside the dark Hangar de Reactores de Combate (Jet Combat hangar), the place where this aircraft is currently being displayed. The second pic shows the aircraft inside Museo Aeronáutico’s main building circa 1995.

I’m sure that AV-8B body was at Wyton for a while, stored in one very empty hanger?

A few from Cottesmore a few years ago. First is XW924, haven’t got a clue about the subject of the rest, though someone at the time said that they thought the airframe was ex USMC!!
What a timely post… thank you very much.
Why ? Because that fuselage is AV-8B 162068 which has just come up for disposal and will be moving to Cronifer Metals very soon.
Cheers……. 😀

Hi all–
One more museum Harrier not mentioned yet–the Canada Aviation Museum at Rockcliffe (Ottawa) ON has a very nice USMC-marked AV-8A on show, on longterm loan (iirc) from one of the major US museums. Can’t currently locate a pic that shows the BuNo on it though.
Ian–splendid job on that Harrier nose. Hardly ever see a project like that over here–more’s the pity!
Cheers

Many thanks to Dave for posting my pictures (he is much better at it than I am!)
There is still some finishing off to be done round the edges (the weather has delayed play) but they both hinge nicely and both canopy latches actually work!
Note that the 3mm polycarbonate on the front canopy survived cutting, drilling and dropping without a complaint – MUCH better than acrylic.
The recommended minimum bend radius is approx 150 times the material thickness so 3mm gives 450 mm radius and it could probably go tighter.
Air intakes are next!!
Ian.

Dear DJ Jay,
No need to be sorry! – on the contrary, I was pleased that your question
implied that the canopy only looked slightly odd as compared to being a complete disaster! After spending hours last summer with bits of strip steel
from B&* and acrylic sheet – guess what? someone had a canopy for sale……(sigh). The front canopy does not have any plexiglass (transparency) as apparently
the original was detonated (test or the real thing I wonder?).
Although I could probably fit acrylic as I did for the home-made one,
does anybody have experience of getting perspex (or acrylic) molded?regards,
Ian.
UPDATE: Posted on Ians (IWS) behalf, two pics of his newly acquired & fitted original T2/4 canopy frames.
The rear is fitted with original perspex, but the front has a temporary acrylic version.
Anyone know where an original front T2/4/8 perspex can be sourced, we’d like to hear from you please.
😀
