preserved WW2 airfields

I was just wondering if there are airfields in England or Germany that exist in their original condition. I remember visiting an airfield called fliegerhorst which is southeast of Frankfurt, which is was used as a US helicopter base, and the guys their told me all the buildings and hangers were original from the 30s. To be honest they didnt look that old, so I couldnt tell if they were kidding.

If it wasn’t for the addition of some hideous new buildings along the southern perimeter alonside the A40, RAF Northolt would be pretty much as per pre-WW2, so, as long as you stood on the runway and looked north it would look much as it did when the RAF’s first monoplane fighters arrived for 111 Sqn in the late ’30’s.

Airfields

The answer is yes, a few. Probably the best unspoilt Expansion Period airfield in the UK is Bicester, although many others retain period features. Others worth a look include Digby, Hemswell, Newton and Upavon.

Duxford still has most of its First World War era Belfast hangars and many other buildings, but has lost a lot of its atmosphere with all the modern additions.

East Kirkby is good too, not very much of it, but what there is has been beautifully restored.
