Prestwick Airport/WW2 air base

Hi all

A freind of mine is doing some family history and it would appear her grandad was a aircraft engineer at the now Prestwick Airport, could anybody help me with a history of the place.

She is compiling a family history book/tree type thing and would dearly love some pictures (now or the 1940-onwards) of the place and the aircraft produced there, so any pictures wich are none copyrighted that she could use would be great.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

ps, i have checked out wikipidia which does help

Chris

I was thinking of the IWM’s online collection of Prestwick photos (about 10 pages)

Trying to find a LIFE essay on Prestwick I found these shots of F-80s arriving in Glasgow but they were assembled at Renfrew it seems (with the dock cranes visible in the photos)

Prestwick

Try “Lion Rampant & Winged – a commemorative history of Scottish Aviation” by Alan Robertson. I believe it was privately publish and is effectively a history of Prestwick airport.

I’m fairly certain there was a Focus publication on Prestwick a few years ago….and there is this….
Prestwick Airport (Archive Photographs) [Paperback]
Peter Berry (Author)

Yep… still got plenty!

Try this fantastic archive, Chris. There are literally dozens of Prestwick photos if you dig around. If it’s a private publication for family consumption only, I can’t think it would be difficult to get permission to use some of them. There are a few WW2 images floating around the Web but I can’t remember where.

The Airfield Information Exchange is a good place to start, though they seem to have little about Prestwick so far, here, http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org/community/showthread.php?441-Prestwick-HMS-Gannet
