Prestwick Thursday 12th – testing out my 400D. (Long)

With five 747 Freighters and an Antonov124 due on Thursday I thought it would be a good oppertunity for an afternoon at Prestwick shooting with my new 400D especially as the weather forecast was good with plenty of sun expected.

Everything turned up so I had plenty of aircraft to shot over the near 5 hours I was there.

These photos are batched processed for speed and I’ll have to take some of the grain out of the long distance ones later.

I hope these are of interested for a look.

Fred.

A Wizz was taxiing out while the other was landing giving the chance to get them both in shot.

You get good oppertunities for two in one shots like this, the Cargolux was sitting at the Holding Point.

The derelict 747 on the North side is being spruced up for some reason and it was getting a wash this day.

The AN124 touched down very early which caught me out, wish I had stayed close to the fence to avoid clutter in the foreground. Oh well.

Very nice. Where abouts are the straight down the runway shots taken from?

Looks more like they’re doing de-icing training to me, presumably in anticipation of the forthcoming inclement weather Scottish winters are famous for! :diablo:

Great shots there.
Can’t see anything qrong with the quality on any of them.
Looks like a good airport to shoot too, with plenty of variety and some good vantage points.
Love the head on shots down the runway – a fair few dips in it!
I caught the An124 leaving NEMA on its way up to you 🙂

Hello Kevin,
It takes a while to get to know the inns and outs of a new camera so I’ve already learned a few things in the past 10 days or so with it.

One noticeable thing is that because it’s 10MP when you reduce down to the usual 1024px wide there are less jaggies in it, before I would nearly always look to take out about 75% of sharpening from the wing edges which always shows it worst but with this camera I rarely seem to find the need to do that provided I’m not cropping into it quite a bit of course.

Another nice bonus is that it’s a lot more stable when using a 1.4x Extender attach (using the tape trick) to a Canon 100-400mm lense, it holds focus much better than my other camera and that helps a lot with long distance pictures.

Brilliant shots! I really have to get up to Prestwick soon, is there a day that has anything good or is there other stuff in every week?

Hello Sam,
Mondays and Thursdays are good for Freighters there are usually at least three on both days during early afternoon.

I keep my eye on Flight Tracker for Freighter movements to decide whether it’s worth a visit and as there are always some going to and from the States seeing the arrival times helps make sure that you will see something.

On this day there were two 747’s outside at the Polar hanger with one in it and five others arrived during my time there, an Evergreen was supposed to be due but didn’t turn up.

Look how small this fellow is he is drawfed by the AN124.

Obviously very little Cargo if any on this one as it departs Southbound with a “Reach” callsign, it was having maintenenace at the Hanger when I arrived.

Very long distance at 400mm plus a 1.4x Extender with a sizeable crop in, I was on 400 ISO for this so it’s a bit grainy without Neat image (yet).

Another very long distance shot at 400mm plus 1.4x Extender and crop in, it’s a Futura one.
