Many years ago (over 20), we went to Duxford for an airshow. I seem to remember it was an
autumn end of season show.
Fine getting in and parked, not so fine when it came to getting out. All of the marshalls from earlier
in the day had evaporated into thin air. Not much fun with everyone heading for one exit.
Also, even back then, it still wasn’t particularly cheap to get in. Especially when you consider that other
elements of the IWM have free entry.
I emailed Duxford at the time to complain about the lack of traffic control late in the day, and to ask about charges.
I was told in reply that there were staff helping with traffic control. Just a shame nobody could see them
As far as entrance charges were concerned, they said this was because there were private companies operating from
the airfield. I still don’t quite get this. Surely those operating aircraft at Duxford have to pay for the use of the hangars and facilities, as they would on any other airfield ? I assume that the IWM pay them to operate their aircraft at airshows ?
So in short, I can accept that extra charges will apply when airshows are taking place.
Not though, when a vehicle rally or forties weekend is being held.
If you consider that a couple taking two youngsters over 16 yr old. Are probably looking at spending somewhere in the region of £100+ for a day out. When you take into consideration food and travel, they aren’t going to go very often.
Not everyone will visit enough to warrant becoming a friend of Duxford.

So how much is a 40’s weekend or a vehicle rally?

Put like that I suppose you are right. Back then though, we were both working full time, so costs were not such an issue.
Now my other half has retired, and I am semi retired, we tend to take more notice of where the money goes.
I couldn’t agree more Alan, it may sound silly, but at times, I feel I need the money more now we are retired than when out at work.
I know a lot of folks moan about the fact OAPs get the Winter fuel allowance, forgetting that A) the elderly feel the cold much more that younger folks, and if your stuck in all day, some form of heating is needed, but if out at work, and the house is M.T. then heating is switched off at home whilst they are at work. So, as you say, you have to look after the pennies.

That’s a fair point, Alan. But I do agree with j-jaz’s view of Duxford’s prices. I make the round trip of about 200 miles 5 or 6 times a year and am never disappointed.

I’ve never once thought Duxford was expensive. For what you get, it’s an absolute bargain. There are few places in the world that offers such an experience to an enthusiast, and during good weather, you can regularly see Spitfires and other warbirds being flown. I’m just glad we have such a place in the UK, many of the foreign members of this forum would love to have a comparable place in their countries.
If they charged £35, I’d still think I was getting a good deal.

Yes, quite right, I meant after all other costs had been covered.
You say that Alan, but as we have shown here, costs have not necessarily increased in real terms at all – in some cases they may be less. I know little about football but let’s say that final was in the 70/80s. Todays adult admission to Duxford is £17.50 – £4.81 in 1980. So if Chessington was a fiver or more Duxford is a snip!!:)

I hope as much as possible goes to maintaining the museum.
As well as paying staff no doubt ? There must be days during the winter where visitors fees don’t cover costs.
I realize that everywhere is expensive now. Earlier this year we considered going to Colchester zoo one Sunday. The last time I went there, was when the Netherlands were playing Argentina in the world cup final !!
Entrance there is about the same as Duxford. So we gave it a miss.

Unfortunately what ever you do costs. The bit that now makes it noticeable is the travelling costs.
I wonder if there was a breakdown of where your entrance money goes what the proportion of it goes to insurance ,tax, outside services such as marquees .

While I don’t consider it cheap it’s the going rate for an event and when you consider the upkeep of the aircraft I would say pretty good value.
.
When you say upkeep of the aircraft, do you mean the preservation of museum exhibits ? As I assume all of the flying aircraft are privately owned ?
I wonder, did the museum have a similar choice to the major museums in London. In that they either levied an admission charge, or made entrance free and received public funding ?
I know that earlier this year they had a deal going with English Heritage, whereby if you were an EH member, admission was two for the price of one. EH membership isn’t exactly cheap though.
Remind me, how much is admission to Cosford, Hendon and the IWM ?

More appropriately from Alan, perhaps, since he started this mistaken thread!!:D

Chas, I am going back to the early 90s, not the 60s.
Now you have got to re-calculate that 😀Jim.

£50 in 1993 is £ 86.28, so still a fair deal!! You are nearly £14 better off today!!:eagerness:

I know that Chas, But a hundred quid is still a hundred quid, just think how much that would have been equal to back then.

Indeed, Linc, that’s exactly my point. You seem to be saying that you didn’t resent paying £50 for Silverstone many years ago, when it was a great deal of money, but do now for paying £100.
In fact you are going to get a helluva shock. £100 now is the equivalent of £5.12 in 1960!!! And £50 in 1960 is now £976!! So, in effect, we are getting staggeringly better value now than we did 50 years ago. And most things are now cheaper in real terms than they were a few decades ago.

Five of us went to Flying legends this year. Taking into account petrol, food (which we took with us), entrance, flightline and program it cost around £200.
While I don’t consider it cheap it’s the going rate for an event and when you consider the upkeep of the aircraft I would say pretty good value.
I’ve never had a problem getting into or leaving Duxford (or any show for that matter). I arrive before 10am and leave after an hour of walking around the hangers after the show, when most people have been fighting to get out.
Just need to chill out, watch the departing aircraft, stroll around the hangers and enjoy the evening.
It’s other shows that are suffering. I used to go to quite a few displays (typical year North Weald, Bigging Hill, Mildenhall, Old Warden, Fairford and several Duxford shows) but now only one or two. Just Legends and Shoreham this year. When I was younger fuel was cheeper and I only took myself.

Take a look at football match prices, and this just for 90 minutes of chav-ball.
Moggy[/QUOTE]
How right you are Moggs, just for kicking a bag of wind about, and some of their wages, are out of this world, absolutely stupid money. And what WHIMPS, a tap on their ankle, and they go off sick for yonks, as opposed to a Rugby player, I have seen ears nearly bitten off, and many a bleeding nose, etc, but they still carry on playing.
Ahhh, that feels better.
