Princess Juliana (1909 – 2004)

The Netherlands is in morning because our beloved Princess Juliana (94) has died.

Princess Juliana was queen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands between 1948 and 1980. She was much loved in Holland and many older Dutchmen feel that we have lost the mother of mothers, and therefore feel it as a personal loss.

My thoughts are with the royal family.

She is the queen mum of the Netherlands. She used to be the queen till 1980 when her doughter, Queen Beatrix, took over the throne. She was quite popular, in particular among the older people.

Although it is sad it happened, it is not much of a surprise really. She has been sick for quite a while and was 94 (!) already.

RIP

My condoleances. But to be honest, It would be hypocrit of me to say I’m in a deep shock right now, but she has done some good things. However, the day our queen mum (fabiola) dies there will be some people (especially the “royal-guards) celebrating in Brussels.

I’m a republican, i don’t believe in the monarchy, but it’s sad to hear that such a revered and much loved person has died R.I.P

Why was she queen till 1980? I thought you were king/queen till death.

I think you are confused with the Pope, whom indeed is in “office” until he dies. The function of Queen is quite important, not only ceremonial but also a states function. So a king can abdicate in favour of a child.

Don’t know, but she was demented I think? But that probably only took the last few years. Nice age.

I don’t think that this comment doesn’t do any justice to the Princess or the Prince or is very appropriate at this moment. Perhaps you can place your comment on another thread?

Now Bernhard can go out and chase the broads without being too careful anymore 😀 Nobody minds a widower looking for some comfort, an adulterer on the other hand…
