Prithvi-3 and Dhanush

Prithvi-III test fired

PTI[ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2004 12:44:24 PM ]

BALASORE: India on Wednesday test fired the indigenously developed medium range missile Prithvi-III from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, about 15 km from here.

The missile tested was the naval version of Prithvi which has a range of 250 to 300 km, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said.

It was test-fired from a simulated launch pad from launch complex III of the ITR at about 11.29 AM.

DRDO chief M Natarajan and scientists who designed the missile, witnessed the test launch.

The missile and its sub-system, being developed under the project name K-15, had to undergo a rigorous check up before the actual trial took place, DRDO sources said.

This is for the first time that the missile, which has the capability to be launched underwater, was put to trial from an artificially made water base with the help of a specially designed canister, they said.

The surface-to-surface single stage ballistic missile could be launched from either a ship or submarine and was capable of destroying land targets.

The missile, about 8.5 metres high and one metre in diameter with latest on-board computer and internal navigation system, could use both solid as well as liquid propellant.

The entire trajectory of the missile, which took off vertically, was tracked through an integrated system of sophisticated radar, electro-optical tracking instruments, a chain of telemetry stations and a naval vessel stationed close to the impact point inside the Bay of Bengal.

Is it the mysterious Sagarika?

we saw the first photo of Saragika from the DRDO brochure recently. I think the sagarika would be a sea launched cruise missile different from prithvi. Its carriage tube on the TEL
was too thin to accomodate the fins of the prithvi (they are fixed fins, not flip-out).
its dimensions would be like a brahmos from the pic. perhaps its just a name for the land attack extended range version of brahmos.

Sagarika is the PJ-08 and is a ballistic missile. It does not carry the Prithvi III designation. The Dhanush is the Prithvi based missile.

Why bother with the Danush if u are developing a land version extended range Bhramos?

you cant shoot down a Balistic missile as easily as you can a cruise.

hmm..

So sagrika will be a cruise missile? is this the one being developed from Lakshya?

Dhanush, the ship launched version of prithvi was tested yesterday from OPV Subhadra anchored 50km off the Orissa coast.

hmm so is this the Dhanush or Sagrika? I always thought Sagrika was supposed to be more complex in nature then Dhanush..

the quoted range is for 1 ton payload I believe. per Arun_s and his rocksim calculations it is around 700km for a 250kg nuclear payload.
this would permit the firing submarine to strike coastal targets from the deep ocean.
