Probs with GeForce6 6600 video card.

Thanks for the help from my last question about video cards, and I went out and bought a GeForce 6 6600 256mb agp 8X video card. The problem is that now the computer runs slow and won’t load up windows media player but I can play flight sim 2004, but only if I play it before I launch windows media player. I replaced the video card with my original 32mb one after I had defraged my 2 hard drives, and done an error check on both drives aswell, this worked fine after spending two days trying to get it to work with the 256mb video card. The min specs for the 256mb card are

Min 300w power supply
AMD Athalon proccessor
128 mb RAM
AGP 2.0 or higher motherboard

I have a 350w power supply, a AMD Athalon 1.8Ghz proccessor, 512mb RAM, and an AGP 8x motherboard. But I have 2 hard drives and 2 cd drives, and now the video card which requires it’s own power supply.

Would getting a higher powered power supply help with my probs?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for all your help that’s the prob fixed.

Had to download the up to date drivers from Nvidia web site and installed windows media player 10 just to be sure, now it all works fine including playing dvd’s which also didn’t work before.

Certainly get the latest drivers from nvidia, my system was very slow after I had installed my 6600 but the new drivers sorted it out instantly, also make sure your motherboard drivers & bios etc are up to date, what make of motherboard do you have?

The 6600 has it’s own processor so is not so “processor” dependant, I can’t imagine your system would run slower after installing a new card due to an inefficient processor due to the card’s independant processor, at worst I would have thought you would see no improvement, this is why it sounds like a driver issue.

in a word, no.

Your psu meets and exceeds the minimum specification, so it should be perfect.

you have probably fallen into the trap that fortiesboy said about on your other thread.

what u could try is getting the most upto date drivers from nvidia. you can get them from their website, but they are huge files – a problem if u have dial-up.

the 6600 requires that you attach a 4-pin power dongle to its side. have you got one, and did you attach it?

what operating system do you use? have you got the latest directX drivers from microsoft?

in the end, you may have fallen into that trap of getting a graphics card that is slightly too powerful for the processor. what processor model do you have?

hope that helps
