I’ve been thinking of upgrading my processor, I currently have an Advent 8000 series pc running a 500 mhz Pentium III, don’t know what the motherboard is though, is upgrading a straight forward job of just fitting a new processor and switching on the pc, or is it more involved?, and can I determine what motherboard I have without taking the outer case off?, OS is 98SE by the way.

Not neccesarily; you might be able to squeeze some more performance by slapping on an overprocessor without really thinning your wallet.
Computer prices are pretty cheap these days- suggest you wait for PCI-Xpress to come out in a few months before you buy any new motherboards…

Most of the time you can’t expect much better than “your_generation”+1. I mean as Frank said , don’t expect dump your 500Mhz stuff and get a state of the art 4Ghz .
In this situation it might be more efficient to change the whole thing. Just save the monitor if it’s a good one.

Well, you won’t be able to change just the CPU. (In fact you can, but you will still have a 2 years old CPU, as the best i could imagine would be a PIII 1GHz.
The minimum to change would be:
Mainboard
CPU
Memory
There is a strong possibility (if not a certitude), that the Graphic cards should get replaced, too.
And that will leave you with a 3 or 4 years old HDD and CD-ROM, which probably start to get worn…
In other words, If I was you, I would change the whole computer (If the monitor is OK, keep it).
Additionnaly, I’d rate you to also change keyboard and mouse, it doesn’t cost much.
