Prop tool question…

Will the *Elephant Ears* doodad that fits P51 props also fit a KC-97 prop? Or is the KC-97 prop dome a whole bunch bigger?
Asking for a friend πŸ˜‰

I did ask on WIX, but the thread got 200+ views & not a single reply…

This gizmo is what I’m talking about:

arsebiscuits, I thought as much. However, it appears that HydraTight has an adapter for the Elephant Ears to fit the KC 97 prop hub. ..or could just use straps, but I’ve been spoiled using the ears on P51 props.

Spoke with another 97 bloke today who said they use the “big bloke on a long steel bar” method as they don’t have the torque multiplier to use with the sleeve socket so that’s one less thing to worry about.

So at this point finding a sleeve socket locally appears to be the only fly in the ointment, but we have a few radial shops in the area.

Dome size on the P-51 prop is smaller than the KC-97’s – and that is assuming the ’97 has a Ham-Stan prop fitted, not a Curtiss electric.

Spline/shaft size is also different.

We’re getting there, now have dome dia 10 13/16 or 10.8125 inches for the KC-97. πŸ™‚

Just a thought but you’re probably the first to ask this question, so I wouldn’t expect a lot of answers. I doubt if there are a lot of people around who have worked with both KC-97 and P-51 props. The manual linked to above certainly includes references for the R-4360 engine but I guess you’ll need the appropriate base plate(s) to fit to the prop(s) of your choice.

I was one of the 200 who looked.
I didn’t reply because I don’t know.
If the diameter of the domes is the same then it might work.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

If you know the two prop models, you could work it out from this catalogue: https://www.hydratight.com/sites/default/files/downloads/media/8000-om-10-11.pdf
