It is an inspiring read, reminding us why we love to mess around with small flying machines. I understand it to be loosely based on real events, and certainly his crash was reported in the local press.

A number of passages, though, lead me to suspect a touch of artistic licence. There is the occassion when the author is on holiday in Somerset with the beguiling but untouchable ‘lift-girl’. Whilst on a walk, they stumble across a Thruster microlight parked up in a field. Without a thought for sevicability, or the unknown owner, in no time at all, he gets it fired up, and whisks her off for an enchanting flight, climbing up through IMC to frolic in the sunshine. Eventually they descend through the murk, exactly back to where they started. Lucky, dangerous, illegal, complete fabrication ? Take your pick.

Still, who cares, it is carefree flying fun, which sometimes seems in short supply these days.

If you enjoy reading where the writer’s ability to describe people and events not only leaves you downright jealous of their writing skills, but also thoroughly entertains you, make sure you check out Brian Lecomber’s writings in Today’s Pilot. He’s just started writing regularly for them. He’s just brilliant.

I seem to recall something about vertical takeoff capabilities of a Thruster being explored in a 65mph headwind! May just go read it again now.

Too scary to even contemplate! 😮

It is a damn good read in my opinion too Daz and Janie. I read it 3 years ago and reckon it would make a good film, some great characters.

I wonder whether R has read it…

I read it and found the characters strangely familar. I lent the book to them and they told me exactly who the people were in real life.

Anthony Woodward has also been writing for Horse and Hound and appears in Friends Reunited. I emailed him and offered him a flight in the Chipmunk. He’s was living in Wales when I rang, so it is unlikely to happen.

The book is brilliant and utterly enjoyable.

Thought it was hilarious, if you know Norfolk well the characters are instantly recognisable, especially his instructor.
