Protracted Production

Today (23 Aug 15) sees the 61st anniversary of the first flight of a Hercules transport plane that in its revised form (C130J) is still being produced today.

Does anyone from this revered forum recall any other manufacturer that can emulate or beat that feat in years of production of any product?

How about the Beech Bonanza…first produced in 1947…while production slowed in the 80s, I don’t think it ever officially stopped.

Lots of household items have been produced forever…Kelloggs Corn Flakes and Rice Crispies, Nabisco saltine crackers, Crackerjack caramel corn, Tootsie Roll candies, Heinz Ketchup and beans, Coke, pepsi, Dr. pepper, Kleenex, Bayer aspirin.

The Lee–Enfield bolt-action, magazine-fed, repeating rifle was the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century. It was the British Army’s standard rifle from its official adoption in 1895 until 1957.[3][4]

A redesign of the Lee–Metford (adopted by the British Army in 1888), the Lee–Enfield superseded the earlier Martini–Henry, Martini–Enfield, and Lee–Metford rifles. It featured a ten-round box magazine which was loaded with the .303 British cartridge manually from the top, either one round at a time or by means of five-round chargers. The Lee–Enfield was the standard issue weapon to rifle companies of the British Army and other Commonwealth nations in both the First and Second World Wars (these Commonwealth nations included Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, among others).[5] Although officially replaced in the UK with the L1A1 SLR in 1957, it remained in widespread British service until the early/mid-1960s and the 7.62 mm L42 sniper variant remained in service until the 1990s. As a standard-issue infantry rifle, it is still found in service in the armed forces of some Commonwealth nations,[6] notably with the Bangladesh Police, which makes it the longest-serving military bolt-action rifle still in official service.[7] The Canadian Forces’ Rangers Arctic reserve unit still used Enfield No.4 rifles as of 2012, with plans announced to replace the weapons sometime in 2014 or 2015.[8] Total production of all Lee–Enfields is estimated at over 17 million rifles.[1]

So 1895 through to 1990 in UK service, Canada still builds them from stock parts for artic use.

Wokka Bob, On behalf of the quote “Terrible trio” may I say thank you in recognising, that without we three, G.D. would possibly be a little less interesting.inasmuch as there would be far less to argue about let alone discuss………..:D

I would personally like to thank the terrible trio for their time and effort in keeping this forum going. To misquote someone who I have forgotten their name” you three are a right pair if ever I saw one”!

To add to this thread, from the Sunday Times this week I found out that Weetabix in its British form started in 1932 and has just started to crack the Chinese market. Doubt it will help their economy but!

Watch it John boy you and I have now officially been named as the only pair, (Chas also included,) that keeps G.D. going. Now I class that as a worthy commendation by any standard. I am sure we three will soon receive our Knighthoods from Key for our relentless services to journalism.

Someone comes on here and asks a perfectly valid question and gets one sensible answer (J Boyle) and the usual suspects turn it in to a joke for the simple reason that they don’t have a clue about the subject and wont spend time even trying to find out, then again it does keep the post count ticking over 🙂

Oh dear ! What have you got against French letters ? If more had been sold and used I wouldn’t have to queue for every damned thing.

Rolls Royce.

A brand is different than a product…unless Rolls Royce is still making Silver Ghosts or Silver Clouds or other pre 1954 models.
I thought about adding Ford F-series pickups, but there isn’t any commonality between 1948 models and 2016 units.

You clearly know more about my intentions than I do!

“, it’s all about opinions with you lot,”. What on earth does that mean.? So no one else expresses their opinions in GD? That’s what it’s for, in case you hadn’t noticed….:rolleyes:

You really do post some tripe here, on occasion…

Does anyone from this revered forum recall any other manufacturer that can emulate or beat that feat in years of production of any product?”

That was the question and there have been a range of direct answers. JB referred to another aircraft manufacturer as well as listing a whole range of other products. If the OP had intended the question to cover ONLY aviation related products he might have mentioned it. This is after all a General Discussion thread, not restricted to aviation matters. I am not aware that any of us was trying to be amusing and as for your fatuous assumption about the knowledge of the posters, it is barely worthy of a response.

Your reply is typical, and don’t try and tell me you weren’t try to be funny because that’s your usual response to something when you and others have no knowledge of a subject, it’s all about opinions with you lot, this be should be renamed the Lincoln, Hunt and Green opinions page LOL 🙂
