Provisional arrangements for get-together

Hello guys and gals ๐Ÿ™‚

When not busy beavering away in the film vaults I have been busy plotting the next forum get-together at Duxford, and have come up with a cunning plan for the day (finer details to be worked out later)

So hereโ€™s the plan:

Ashleyโ€™s Duxford Delights ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tour of the north side at Duxford, to (hopefully) include buildings currently occupied by the Film and Video Archive, the Department Exhibits and Firearms and the Departments of Printed Books and Documents

Visit to Hanger 1 to include internal tour of Sunderland and Lancaster โ€“ plus possible looksee inside Spitfire Mk24 and Vulcan

Film show in the Astra Cinema (I hope to put together a photographic display about Duxford to put up in the cinema)

It depends on how many buildings on the north side I can have access to and how many of you come what order the day takes and what sort of film show we have. Still working on things like cost, car parking etc (I really donโ€™t think it will be anymore than the usual admission price)

Provisional date remains Saturday 13th September

If anyone has any photos, memorabilia concerning Duxford please bring them along (I am particularly looking for photos etc from the early airshows at Duxford and when the Museum was first open in the 1970s)

Please let me know what you think

Ashley, Duxford Correspondent

Damn, just seen this thread. Can you make it a week later? I’ll be back in the UK by then!!

Hello Rob, by the way. Fellow FOD member here; can thoroughly recommend membership. As was said above, it’s very handy if you’re just passing by, and the cockpit access evenings are great.

Thanks Ashley, sound like a really good day. Unfortunately, I’m also on Honeymoon (not with Damien!!!) and don’t get back till the evening of the 14th. Damn.

As a Sunderland crew member since 1982, I’d be more than happy to bore everone to sleep on a tour of the old boot!

With that in mind, probably best for everyone that I’m not going to make it:D

Hopefully meet you all one the next one.

Thanks to Ashley for posting the link.

It is currently ยฃ30 for an adult. That gives you a years free admission to Duxford on non-airshow days, 20% discount on “on the day” airshow ticket prices, 20% off in the IWM shops and restaurants, 3 copies of “Duxfrod News” a year and the chance to take part in exclusive FOD events. Tomorrow evening (Wednesday 18th) we are having an open turret event in the Land Warfare Hall. Members will be allowed inside exhibits like the Russian T-55, Challenger, Comet tank, etc.

If anyone wants to come and find out more please see us in the Flypast/FOD marquee (another perk) at Flying Legends (i’m the short one with short hair and a beard!)

Hope to see some of you there (even if you don;t want to join!)

Cheers,

Rob.

Morgar3…welcome to the board ๐Ÿ™‚

I think there are actually quite a few members here who are Friends of Duxford…there are others who live too far away to visit Duxford on a regular basis to make joining worthwhile. I am well aware of all the activities of the Friends of Duxford as not only are my parents both members, my father is a DAS member working with the map collection, and I work for the Imperial War Museum.

I have made some very good friends here through the forum – not just v/t but r/t too…and organising something like I am proposing for September is my way of giving something back to my friends…

With all due respect, a forum get-together is more to me than just an event, or opportunity to look behind the scenes at Duxford like FOD, but a gathering of friends.

~Gets off her soap box~

Ashley

P.S. Yes, Robert’s talk and film show are both excellent – as enjoyed by the Flypast motley crew at the first forum get-together at Duxford in January ๐Ÿ™‚ And, yes, the north side tour is fascinating – after two years working on the north side at Duxford the buildings and their contents remain as fascinating and spine tingling to me now as they were when I first started ๐Ÿ™‚

Peter,

No, it was the one in the AAM. We made sure we had a look inside both that and the Dakota before they were strung up.

Sounds good to me.
I’ll try and con some friends into putting me up overnight on the Saturday. Bassingbourn’s a lot nearer than Chesterfield!

Hi Ashley

Count me in for either day.

Peter

PS. Rob, I hope the B25 you went in was “Grumpy”. You’d need a b****y long ladder to get in the other one!

Have any of you guys thought about joining the Friend Of Duxford? Its just that what Ashley is planning is exactly the sort of event we plan throughout the year! Introductions: my name is Rob Morgan, i live about 10 minutes from Duxford, and am one of the founding members of the FOD committee.

Throughout the year we hold events for our members that allow them to see things you can’t normally see. Photoshoots are our most popular event, when we open up a hangar after hours, and let 50 or so of our members inside 6 of the aircraft. Previously we have had our members inside the Lancaster, Vulcan, Sunderland, Spitfire, Ju-52, Tornado, Buccaneer, B-17, B-29, B-25, B-52, Phantom, Lightning, Wessex, Dakota, F-111, Sea Vixen, Tanks in the Land Warfare Hall, etc (you get the idea). We also have film shows in the Astra (highlight of last years cinema events was a presentation by Robert Rudhall on the making of the movie “Battle of Britain”, followed by a showing of the film). We also have trips to military bases (Mildenhall, Coltishall) and behind the scenes visits to other museums (Fleet Air Arm, Shuttleworth, Hendon).

If anyone is interested please come and see us in the Flypast marquee.

I’ll get off of my soapbox now.

Cheers,

Rob.

P.S. Ashley – we had a trip around four of the North Side buildings last year. It took all day, and was absolutely fascinating!

Hi Ashley,

After failing miserably to make Cockpitfest, I ain’t going to make a definite promise. However, it’s on on non working weekend, so either day should be good for me:)

Cheers,
Neilly
