According to the preliminary arrangement, Sikorsky (UTX: news, chart, profile) will use its helicopter model and Boeing (BA: news, chart, profile) will tap its avionics and electronic systems expertise for the 146-helcopter bid on the Pentagon program, known as the personnel recovery vehicle.
Sikorsky will be the prime contractor on the bid, according to company spokesman Bud Grebey.
The proposed HH-92 will be a variant of the company’s S-92 helicopter.
In a separate contract for supply the next presidential helicopter, Marine One, Sikorsky used a version of the S-92. Lockheed Martin (LMT: news, chart, profile) won that contract with a European design. See full story.
Lockheed is using that AgustaWestland helicopter to compete for the Air Force PRV contract, as well. It is working with Northrop Grumman (NOC: news, chart, profile) on the bid.
Sikorsky makes the HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters used for search and rescue flights. Those aircraft also fly in support of special operations missions, as well.
The new contract work could see production starting in 2008
