In April 1992 I flew Virgin to EWR from LHR and they had just installed little 3-4 inch screens with six channels! At the time I thought this was great and only a matter of months until all planes would have them. Here we are 12 years on and still it is possible to fly a long way with a major airline and not have PTV! Incidentally I managed to remove mine, the unit had a rubber surround fixed with Velcro, when you removed this there were some little screws that I removed using the knife that came with my dinner! This proved much more entertaining that the pants film that was on! I still have the knife as a souvenir. I put the screen back as I did not want to cut the wires 😀

A-ha. Right. VS do have PTVs in ALL their planes, however at the moment they have 4 different types. The best is V:PORT, which is the one I described above, it is fitted to about a third of their planes. Then their is Odyessey, Arcadia and Nova. Odyessey and Arcadia are v.much the same, except Odyessey gives you a bigger screen.
However, the LGW planes have NOVA. This is a new system to VS and they will replace it by the end of next year. This is because the VS LGW 744s are from the cancelled Alitalia order, which RB snapped up quick. So, they already were installed with this IFE called ‘NOVA’. It only has about 7 channels and 1 TV channel and a Skymap, but there is a kids channel for the children. BUT, no games.
However, should you be lucky, they may do a plane swop if one of the LGW planes go tech, and you will get a LHR plane with V:PORT or Odyessey on it.

I’ve heard that Qantas have a very good inflight entertianment system on their PTV’s. Anyone care to confirm this? I’m flying them from Frankfurt to Singapore and back in about 5 weeks time, so I’m very much looking forward to it! 😀
I think there’s is very similar to BA’s. The screen is exactly the same.

Thanks for the link!

SQ has a great PTV system in their fleet. I don’t know about economy, but when I flew their business class 2 years ago, these were some of the features: 10 inch screen, on demand video channels, and video games. I’m not sure of the specifics in terms of how many channels or how many games, but these were in the ‘old’ business clas, the Ultimo seats. Now the Spacebed should be fleet wide and I would imagine these to be slightly better. I will be flying SQ from EWR to AMS this July in business class, so I’ll be able to give an update on how the Spacebed is at that time.

Both. They have all this kind of stuff, video games , a selection of a dozen of movies on demand , news channels etc…
However I repeat “among the the airlines I flew with”. maybe some better system exist on other airlines.

BAs 777s and 747s all have PTVs. The 767s and 757ERs have the big overhead screens in economy. The 767s in long haul configuration also have the same First and Club arrangement as the 777s and 747s, but still the overhead TVs in economy sadly. I don’t think there is any plan to change this layout, however 2 new 767s are being configured for long haul this month, and we will have to see if they will be given economy PTVsor not…
