Australian Warbird Association Limited has issued a statement regarding recent events with its members – see more at the link https://www.facebook.com/groups/253014804764295/#!/groups/253014804764295/
If anyone has any concerns they need to take it up with the AWAL board who have issued the notice.

I learnt the hard way not to providing links to Fb pages and also Photobucket.People without accounts cannot see them.Bit counterproductive that.
If I posted a link* to my Photobucket account every one of you could see it… as I have everything set to “public”.
I simply don’t put anything I consider private there.
* Actually, there are quire a number of my posts on this forum that have image-links to items in my PhBkt account… and every one can see them.
However, only those I have “friended” can see my Facebook account, as I do have the security settings there screwed down tight. Its that privacy thing… FB sells all the information you don’t make private.

…I like The Cruel Sea, Run Lola, Run, Ry Cooder and Van’s RV aircraft…
I’d love to know what demographic that lot puts you in! 😀

I am not so filled with self-importance that I would consider anybody to be the least bit interested in my Facebook ‘Likes’ as an individual.
Tracking is about demographics and targeting online ads to mass audiences.
If anybody really wants to know I like The Cruel Sea, Run Lola, Run, Ry Cooder and Van’s RV aircraft they are welcome to ‘pry’

Hey Moggy,
One of the less obvious ways Facebook can track you around the web is the “Like” buttons, so even if you only log into Facebook to read some article, going to other sites and pages displaying the ‘like’ button can let Facebook know where you go. Obviously there is a lot of 3rd party tracking going on, not just facebook.
Here is a 2010 article on tracking
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129298003
and there is a good article at the WSJ which includes this (and ironically all the ‘like’ g+ buttons too)

As you can guess I took a look at the linked facebook page.
Part of my day job involves working for the world’s largest (or maybe second largest) motor company ‘knowledge centre’ where we do cover social media as an aid to the worldwide dealer net so I am always interested.
The page is inoffensive, so the link was left in place, but as others have commented and announcement about an announcement is hardly the way to introduce new users to a page with any expectation that there will be any interest in a second visit. Content is key, and there wasn’t much.
As an aside, I must admit there whilst there are many reasons for not using Facebook, privacy is one I have ‘never’ understood. FB doesn’t mine your secret and private files to publish stuff on your behalf. It publishes only what you put there.
If people find out information about you that you’d rather not have known, don’t shoot the messenger. It’s your fault, not Facebook’s.
Unfortunately though people tend to believe horror stories in The Daily Mail, or whatever its equivalent is in the country in question.

Pretty much agree with Mark, I avoid Facebook for privacy reasons and despit owning a warbird, am not a member of AWAL. Prefering instead to deal direct with CASA regardless of cost. The recent court action shows how self regulation has it’s short comings. Best to deal with a Government Authority that can fine me and I can litigate against them. There is also a small measure of control through public interest and elected representatives.

Mark,
Thanks for taking the time to post that, you aren’t the only one!

daniel/liberator/phil/whoever?
It seems the same problem was encountered over at Wix for much the same reasons, and resulting in the thread being locked there.

Clearly I wasnt the only one to question “why” or “how” the “Public AWAL notice” or information was being posted on public forums, with links to as passworded facebook site?
In anycase the need to access a password protected facebook account seems passed, as AWAL have updated their website with a comprehensive response and description of the issues being raised as concerns, along with a revised date of the resumption of the AGM.
It would seem simpler for those interested, and those needing to know, to go direct to the source, and get the official announcements directly.

I dont intend to get into a debate of the internal issues of the AWAL itself, thats an issue for its paid up members.

? Edit: I’m not quite sure why the OP hasnt simply referred us to the AWAL website?, rather than his own Facebook page?
Mark Pilkington
I agree.
So-called social media appeals to a certain cross section of society, albeit a very large section. I used to have a Facebook account, but I don`t now because I gained nothing from it personally, and not everyone wants to put personal details online. Some of these pages are partially accessible if you don`t sign up, but I have never been able to view any of the links people have posted on here.
I`m a member of the Miss Canada IV restoration team, and all their updates go on Facebook, but I still don`t have an account.
If there is an important announcement regarding an official body, it probably is better to use a link to the actual web site rather than one not everyone who may need to know can access.
Just my opinion.

Hello Daniel/Phil/Whoever?
As I dont have a facebook account, the details behind your link was not clear and I therefore was puzzled as to the value and purpose of it being posted in a public forum?
I suspect plenty of others here do not have facebook either?
I was first advised via PM that it was your facebook account and later the AWAL facebook account that you administer –
My edits clarify and acknowledge that.
I was also advised the facebook page announced the intention to have a formal announcement and conference in the next few days, ie announcement of an announcement?
If thats wrong, I’m happy for you to correct that, but of course if the details can be made public, then why not post them directly into here in the first place?
If the details cant be made public, then why post the link here?
I assume you were posting this here as a service for AWAL members, but its a public forum and clearly this will attract the interest of others.
What was missing Phil, was at least something to put this all in context and explanation, especially to those forumites who are not AWAL members and aware of the background, or have facebook, or advice that this was private AWAL “members business.”
If “we” are not meant to know the background, or to show interest in this announcement, then its probably best for such announcements not to be made on a public forum which will therefore attract attention?
But I will leave that up to you and AWAL?
I accept that you are operating their facebook site, and are apparantly updating it with information from AWAL directly, I was not questioning that in the first place, just why it was posted here, and then apparantly limited access??
I have now read their website and other sources of news and think I have enough of an understanding about whats going on, “not” to want to know any more.
The AWAL members will clearly resolve whatever issues are needed to be addressed, and I wish them luck in that.
regards
Mark Pilkington

Hello Mark P
Obviously instead of harassing me with your petty comment, maybe you should do some research before putting fingers to keys?
Such as talk to AWAL next time. I “manage” the AWAL facebook page to help AWAL members and interested enthusiasts get news out and keep in touch with warbird events that might interest people.
I also promote membership news so people can join AWAL to support Australian warbird operations.
Why does AWAL have Facebook page?, because it reaches out to people in the 21st Century format….thats why and its a easy format.
As i understand it according to the agreement i entered with AWAL, as i am willing to put time into their page and know how facebook pages work, the AWAL board is happy for me to “run” it for them.
Mark .. you calling it “my” page is a disservice to AWAL and shows your really out of touch. It is the “AWAL page” .
You obviously dont have any idea about me or how i help AWAL.
AWAL has already sent out news via emails, webpage and facebook is it 3rd medium to use.
Phil Buckley
