Publicity Photo of Firebirds

I have been trying to locate a copy of a publicity photo I once saw (around the mid sixties). I think it was on the cover of one of the older aviation magazines. I thought it was Air Pictorial but not obviously from the list of old publications.

It featured members of the No 56 Sqn Firebirds team walking from their Lightnings and always sticks in my mind as being the inspiration for my joining the RAF and flying the mighty beast myself.

If anyone has, or knows of a copy of either the magazine in question or the photo itself I’d be most interested to hear from them.

I recall something similar, but in colour, and with a big line up of the squadron Lightnings.

Or is that all a false memory syndrome?

Perhaps a photo-shoot on the same day?

Not thinking of this are you. hope not ’cause it’s 19 Sqdn.

Not the images you are looking for, but the beer and the ladies may also have given you the inspiration to join up ? 😉

I, too, seem to think it was on the cover of a Flying Review. I recall I mentioned it another thread about a year ago. I also think I still have that issue in question but, sadly from the point of view of the original enquiry, it is boxed up with a lot of other magazines at the moment and not easy to get at.

Firebirds Publicity

Thanks Charlie but I looked at that site originally without success hence my forum query – just waiting to hear back from pistonrob.

IIRC, Flying Review had a colour photo on the front cover of a 56 Sqn Mk 1A (XM171?) going down in the vertical. Loverly photo:D

I seem to recall that Flying Review had the most colour in those days.

Andy;

No! certainly not false memory syndrome!

The photo I recall was in colour too, and has a line up of 56 Squadron Lightnings in the background. I know I have this image on an old magazine cover somewhere…I’m just trying to think where. I do have a massive stash of old Airfix Magazines, so it might be amongst those. I’ll have a rummage! Then again, it might be with my stash of Flying Review…

I’ll start digging!

Regards;
Steve

Such a photograph exists and is in my collection. If you care to email me then will send it to you tomorrow ( I have a hospital appointment this afternoon) That is, unless someone beats me to it?

I have a kind of feeling that it once appeared on the front cover of Airfix Magazine, back in the days of Aviation News?

I know the picture. It was a wow-factor for me, too!

As an aerobatic teams specialist and historian, I don’t recall any photo of the Firebirds pilots on the ground as described. The Firebirds only formed for the one year, 1963, so if it was in any mag it would have been that year or possibly the following year. I think maybe this was an RAF recruiting ad picture taken with a 56 Sqn. Lightning in the background before the Firebirds were formed, but will check my archives and see if I can locate it.
