Yes, newspaper journalists are famous for missing the real stories.

Only skimmed the article but seems to be plenty of reference to parts etc and nothing about the potential for lost crew to be finally found.

:diablo:I’m sorry but I just can’t stop laughing at that comment…. no disrespect intended to any egg-whisk likers ok š
Although I cant lay any claim to the saying I remember a commentator at the East Fortune airshow telling the very same story which came from a show pilot at some point during the day.
I am pretty sure the story was relayed by none other than Ken Ellis I think.

That’s ok Howard, nearly choked on me tea!:D

Sorry about that John ā I thought Iād told you that story before! š®
Basically at the last ever 1661 HCU Reunion down in Worcester I was ‘cornered’ by three veterans who relayed the āstoryā of the unusual usage of the ex-1661 HCU Stirling fuselage by gentlemen from McAlpine.
They assured me that theyād ALL seen it being āinstalledā ā sadly the first clue came when they revealed that they were each on different HCU Courses (approximate timeframe differences of 6 months); plus the section of airfield that the building work related to, was built before Stirlings came to Winthorpe!
I have also heard a similar āsecond-handā tale that involved a Manchester fuselage!! š
By: 12jaguar - 11th December 2012 at 20:49
ā¦sssshh ā we asked you not to tell anyone about that! š®
Thereās also the Stirling fuselage that was used to culvert one of the taxiways at RAF Winthorpe!!
????
Don’t do that to me Howard:p

Buried Bits !!!
I know,it’s a real pain down here.
When i worked down a tin mine (fact) we were always having to clear away old Merlin and Hercules engines that festooned the place.
The crated ones caused the most problem as they frequentlly jammed in shafts and blocked ventilation routes.
If that was’nt bad enough the departing Yanks did the same with jeeps and other equipment that was not going back.
No one had any thought for the poor miners who were going to have to clear this away eventually.
I had better not go on about what happened to the ‘Mawgan’ Griffons the Culrose ‘Centaurus’,and the Sea Griffons from the Marine Craft unit at Falmouth, they were not at all suitable for Go-Karts or speedboats.
Having said that two Pobjoys ‘popped up’ on E-Bay this week, the pair went for Ā£2.5k.

Idly wondering if we need one central thread of poorly researched Telegraph articles :p
Oh why the exclusivity? Why single out the Telegraph? Why not one central thread concerning the poorly researched journalism of all elements of the media – written, spoken and visual? But no – I know why not. Such would swamp the forum and we’d have time for nothing else!

Theyāre actually starting the next āSouthfield Excavationā on 14th January 2013 ā the Commencement Notice has already been lodged with the District Council! š
Thereās also the Stirling fuselage that was used to culvert one of the taxiways at RAF Winthorpe!!
However as for the genuine comment at the end of #9, who knows!! š

Clifford Bullās comment is interesting re the āā¦Birchfeild private housing estate near Lincolnā¦.ā; Iāve never heard of a āBirchfeild ā (Birchfield) Housing Estate in Lincoln!
Iāve heard of a Birchwood Estate that was built on part of the former RAF Skellingthorpe site (two small displays around that area re-the airfield) ā but then Iāve never heard of all these items that were uncovered when it was built.
However if you moved off site from there out towards the River Trent then perhaps thereās another story to be told! š Maybe I ought to contact the Telegraph!! :diablo:
What about the buried lanc under hanger 2 at NAM!

What exactly are trainee aircraft?
Ones that haven’t quite got the hang of it yet I guess. Sopwith built quite a few, like Pups that seem to prefer resting upside down, or Camels that didn’t like taking commands from the pilot
