Pup or Bulldog forced landing last week

Last Weds 13th July the BBC website reported a “Scottish Aviation Beagle Pup” crash-landing in a corn field near the A128 at a village called Bulphan in Essex. The aircraft was on a flight from Orsett. According to the BBC, the pilot reported that the engine had lost power and the undercarriage “broke on landing”.

Does anyone know if it was a Pup or a Bulldog and what the reggie was?

N556MA

I think this aircraft is c/n b.013 ex G-AWEB which was perhaps the first to go to the US as the Series 100 (Conti 0-200) demonstrator with the importer Miami Aviation; hence, the regn N556MA. I understand it was bought by the current owner whilst he was in the US and it returned to the UK late last year, to be based at Norwich.

Given its lineage, it is sad that this aircraft has come to grief in the way that it has. From the looks of its condition in the pictures on Airliners it will be a complete write-off. In due course the aircraft will be sold off by the insurers; wonder if an enterprising museum might be able to get hold of it and restore it to static display condition. Newark?

What’s about the US registration? (We’ve also got them).
Best regards

that sort of thing happens here every few months – i live near a UAS (university air squadron) they often land short by about 300 metres in a field etc.

Doesn’t look to good, is the pilot OK?

Yes, they are both flying again.

AF, Pup was Norwich based, both OK I believe. Saw them the day after. Engine failure on take off apparently but don’t know what caused it.

I can assure you that I have no intention of speculating. Now that I know the aircraft’s identity I can chat to its owner and ask him what happened in person.

Sorry – it wasn’t meant as a personal comment and apologies if it came across as such. It’s just that it has happened before and can get quite messy. I hope all concerned are OK.

By the way – Ant, thanks for the link to Airliners.

It was a Pup, I believe. I wonder whether it might be better to hold back on the speculation about how, what, why etc, given the BBC’s well known innacurate reporting in the past and leave it to the professionals to sort out what happened?

It was a Pup, not North Weald based.
