Qantas 767 bound for Hong Kong returns to Sysney

A Qantas flight bound for Hong Kong has turned back to Sydney as a precaution after the captain was alerted to a possible operational problem with the aircraft, Qantas said.
Flight QF187 left Sydney for Hong Kong at 3.20pm (AEST) with 189 passengers on board.
“About three-quarters of an hour into the flight there has been a message in the cockpit and the captain has elected to return to Sydney as a precaution,” a Qantas spokeswoman said.
“The message related to a minor issue but the captain has erred on the side of safety, as they always do, and as a precaution they’re heading back to Sydney.”
The spokeswoman said there were no security issues involved.
“It relates to the operation of the aircraft,” she said.
The spokeswoman said the aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, was circling above Sydney to burn off fuel in order to reach a suitable weight for landing.
The flight was expected to land at Sydney airport about 8pm.
All passengers would be transferred to another flight to Hong Kong and engineers would examine the aircraft for possible problems once it was on the ground, she said.
“It’s not going to be clear (what the problem is) … until the engineers can have a look but it does appear to be a minor issue,” she said.
