Qantas has applied for an allocation of capacity to operate services beyond Hong Kong to the United Kingdom.
The International Air Services Commission said that as a result of recent amendments to the Australia – Hong Kong air services arrangements, Australian carriers were now permitted to operate services beyond Hong Kong to the UK. Qantas has applied for the allocation of the seven beyond services to start with three services from November 2004, a fourth service from November 2005 and the remainder from March 2006.
Virgin Atlantic plans for UK-Australia services via Hong Kong have been delayed by policy negotiations between Hong Kong and European Commission officials.
