Qantas looks at the A345 for Perth-London non stop

There have been fresh reports that Qantas is to acquire the very long Airbus A340-500 – for nonstop services such as Sydney-Dallas and Perth-London.
The A340-500 has an essentially identical cockpit and systems to Qantas’s twin engine A330s, but would mean introducing an all new engine type (the Rolls-Royce Trent 500) to the Qantas fleet.
The A340-500 can carry 313 passengers more than 8500nm (1575km) or further with restricted loads.

but the non-BA ones don’t have RB211’s, so the config shouldn’t be an issue.

The 762’s have all gone and the 763’s are being transferred to the domestic fleet and Australian Airlines as the A330’s are delivered

Coz in that configuration you can be sure as hell no-one else is going to want them! Who else operates a fleet of RR 767s apart from BA? (Who actualy own the Qantas ones anyway)

When will all the 767’s be gone? And how long do QF expect the 744’s to last them, quite a bit yet I guess…but how long? 6? 8? 10? 15? years

They also have 12 A380’s on order, so yes they are leaning towards the Airbus product for their long haul fleet

Qantas Airways has signed a preferred nomination letter with CAE for its A380 training requirements. The purchase is subject to final agreement and envisages the airline taking delivery of an A380 full-flight simulator in June 2006, as well as two training devices. The 12 x A380 aircraft are on order for delivery between 2006 and 2011.

I thought there were talks of QF getting the 777 but I’m not sure. Weren’t they one of the members of the “Working Together” group? If I remember correctly, they are the only memeber that hasn’t ordered the 777 yet.

Would Qantas consider the 777? Being a large Boeing customer already, or are they going Airbus, with the A330 just the start?

Why bother?

Matthew, I didn’t mean “why bother” taking delivery of the aircraft, period. I meant, “why bother” using it on the LAX run when they already have the 744ER? I have no problem with QF taking delivery of the A345 to use for PER-LHR and SYD-DFW.

Thats good for Qantas….. A345 will do them good. Probably also can be used on the LA sectors.

Well of course they could as they would have more than adequate range. But with the 744ER handling this route rather beautifully, why even bother with the A345?
