Qantas said it will acquire five additional two-class 737-800s for its domestic operations, which will bring its 737-800 fleet to 33 by the end of 2005. The airline has taken delivery of 21 737-800s since Feb. 2002 and another two will be delivered in midyear. A further 10 will join the fleet between Dec. 2004 and Dec. 2005. Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon said the cost of acquiring the five new aircraft was included in the company’s recent A$6.7 billion ($5.05 billion) capital expenditure forecast for the three years to June 2006.

Yep , but I read that those retrofit winglet kits are awfully expensive.

There is an upgrade kit available for the -300/400/500 engines that makes them more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. I believe Southwest is fitting all their ‘classics’ with these kits. They don’t actually replace the entire engine with the ‘new’ engines, however. Winglets are available for the classics, that’s for sure.

It’s just a cabin refurbishment, which means new seats and overhead storage bins and IFE, there is no mention of winglets or engines being changed

Now, this only going by something I read a while back…
I think this entails the fitting of winglets, the newer CFM engines and a complete refurb of the interior to NG specs.

The 400’s are being fitted out to 800 standard as we speak, so i think they’re destined to be around for a while yet

When they have phased out the -300 series do you think Qantas will then begin phasing out the -400 series as they are starting to get a little older!

Yep, the 738 is a very economical plane in it’s size range.
By: Airline owner - 31st March 2004 at 14:26
holy cow they must be economical if an airline is bulk ordering them
By: Bmused55 - 31st March 2004 at 11:39
Excellent.
Obviously they’ve tasted the economy of the 738
