Quarter of Jaguars at airbase grounded

Some of the aircraft have recently had their engines upgraded
A quarter of the Jaguar aircraft at a Norfolk airbase have been grounded after a problem with one of the aircraft’s engines.
Those Jaguars at RAF Coltishall which have undergone a recent engine upgrade or are waiting to be upgraded have been taken out of service.

The incident involving a Jaguar GR3A happened about 10 days ago.

It was described by a Ministry of Defence spokesman on Monday morning as an “in-flight emergency”.

An engine on the aircraft had to be shut down but it was able to land safely at RAF Coltishall.

Developed in the 1960s

The decision to ground the aircraft was taken at the highest level.

About a quarter of the 50 Jaguars are affected.

The move has prompted speculation about the future of the aircraft and of RAF Coltishall itself, which is home to all four squadrons of Jaguars currently being used by the RAF.

The Jaguar, which was first introduced in the 1960s, is coming to the end of its working life and is due to be replaced by the Eurofighter.

It has already been announced that the Eurofighter will not be based at RAF Coltishall.
