Queens flypast

I see the reds will be involved after getting their PDA a week early, but anybody know the list yet?

The Spit/Hurricane usually tuck-in at the last minute from their hold which is usually over Fairlop. The main formations get themselves organised over the North Sea using Southwold as the datum, but the Reds usually slot-in further down the route, and BBMF join-in last of all.

Re- earlier comments, bear in mind that Harriers did take part once – at the BofB 50th event. Very impressive they were too, although the rehearsal at Wittering was even better!

Had the pleasure of seeing the flypast from my garden as it transitioned over RAF Northolt. Didn’t think I would get to see the Spitfire and Hurricane, but out of no where they appeared from a different direction and gave me a nice flyover of the garden.

Fooled

Saw it fly past my house about 12 59. Awesome! I still cant believe how quick it is to get from my house (East London way) to the mall. As they left my eye sight, they appeared on the telly!

I downloaded the route map which seemed to show the track about half way between Hadleigh and the A12 and parked in an appropriate place!!The flypast appeared dead on time but flying a good distance to the South,I guess they were following either the A12 or the railway!!

Brings back fond memories of joining-in with the flypast a few years back, in one of the whip Hawks :-

 http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y146/Shefftim/ninethree.jpg

Sitting in the VAS room at Marham, watching Her Maj in Horse Guards Parade on the telly, somebody says “hey we’d better get going or she’ll have nothing to watch!” Great fun parked at the runway threshold watching the Tornado formation get airborne in groups, going round the circuit and adding a few more aircraft each time until all nine plus spares are all aboard. Then it’s off to the North Sea to cruise around in ever decreasing circles until all the other formations slot in. Then a few rolls over the top of each group with a layout chart on your lap, commenting on the various aircraft that need to nudge in or out a little bit to get the formations perfect. Then finally it’s off over Southwold and along the traditional route to London.

We tagged along as far as Chelmsford while I tried to grab some photos of a C-17, but the fuel reserves dictated that this was as far as we could go, so it was “bon voyage” to the rest of the guys, followed by a sprightly climb to clear an airway before heading back to Leeming. Some careful flying managed to get us home with a trickle of fuel to spare but our colleagues in the second Hawk couldn’t quite make it, and diverted to Coninsgby.

Ahh, the effort these guys make to entertain Her Maj. I don’t think she has any idea – bless!

Thank you for that explanation, TJ.

No problem.

‘Unfortunately the Lancaster is unable to take part in the Queens Birthday Flypast on Saturday 12 June 2010 as following a routine check it has been found that due to normal wear and tear one of the undercarriage struts needs to be replaced. Due to the age of the aircraft this could not be made and fitted in time for the Flypast on Saturday. However, it is hoped that the aircraft will be back in the air, completing planned displays within a week.’

Interestingly, we had that Sentinel out of Wittering earlier this week at a strange departure angle and at low level heading out over Peterborough city centre

Keith Sowter posted this very interesting item on Norwich Spotters earlier showing a practise over Norfolk today …..

I saw them too, about 15 secs later (from Old Buckenham). From what I saw, I half expect to see them practising again today!

Well that makes sense although I can’t see the Spit or Hurri making it clear of the built up area – what about the Hawks?

Discussed on the following PPRuNe thread. It is the Harriers poor glide capability at the selected flypast height that precludes it from taking part. The Hawk has a greater glide capability. The Spitfire/Hurricane have a better glide capability and also significantly less fuel than the Harrier.

Essentially the Harrier has the glide capability of a brick. For that reason during the 25th Falklands flypast Hawks from 100 Squadron and Royal Navy FRADU represented the Harrier/Sea Harrier.

Nor Harriers (again!)

The Harrier issue has been explained time and time again over the years. From the MOD. Issued at the time of the 2007 Faklands 25th flypast.

‘Harriers will not take part in the flypast over London because single engine aircraft without the capability to glide in the event of an engine failure are not permitted to fly low over central London. Were they to take part, they would have to fly too high to be part of the display.’

Wot no helicopters?! 🙁

Given they are such crucial assets, at least one would be good…but then again, they are probably all being utilised

Nor Harriers (again!)
