Query about R.A.F. serviceman WWII.

This is a picture of my father Walter Henry Layne (Wally.)

The photograph was taken during the Second World War.

He was stationed at Penrhos Bombing and Gunnery School. 14 O.T.U., 50 Squadron, 1661 H.C.U. and 97 Squadron.

In addition he was a P.O.W. at Dulug Luft, Heydekrug, Thorn, Fallingbostel and Stalag Luft III Sagan.

My question for the board is, can it be determined when and where the picture was taken?

The numbers that he is holding do not correspond with his service number which at that time was 963102 or his P.O.W. number which was 605. Has anyone any suggestions as to what the numbers represent?

The RAF ID card (F1250) had a completely different number from service number but I do not think it is a 1250 photo as they were usually just ‘Head and shoulders’ (and also I am unsure when they became photo ID) and also the number seems too low to be a 1250 number.
How about a unit photo ? Maybe for a training unit so that the staff would be able to keep track of all trainees or perhaps a ‘Group’ Mugshot ?

I see 42 and perhaps Royal Air. Any suggestions as to what this picture represents? In 1942 my father was with 50 Squadron and 50 Squadron Conversion Flight, 9 Conversion Flight and 1661 HCU.
