Question about movie 'Top Gun'

Hi

I saw the movie Top Gun for the first time yesterday. Terrible script and acting, but amazing filming and special effects (especially as this movie was made in the days before cgi)

One thing bugged me though. What country was the USN fighting against? Supposedly it was set in the Indian ocean, had latest model (c. early 80s) “MiG”s with the Soviet (or generic Communist) stars, and was equipped with Exocet AShMs.

The constant references to Korea made me figure they were hinting at Soviet aircraft, perhaps based out of an African country?

Was it purposefully meant to have contractory facts in order to be PC?
