Caught a flight from EMA yesterday evening and after takeoff, when we were at a thousand feet or so and heading roughly eastwards, we passed close by what was obviously an old WWII air base which now looks like it holds a motor racetrack. It had the usual triangular runway layout. Can you ease my inquisitiveness and identify it for me? Thanks muchly.
Oh, and hello to the two spotters with cameras beside the perifence! The bloke next to me had no idea what you were doing! 🙂

I don’t know what the regular headings in/out of East Mids are but another one which has a motorsport theme these days is the former airfield at Darley Moor (formerly the satelit of RAF Ashbourne, housing detachments of 42 OTU), Derbyshire. It’s NNE of Derby, just at the southern tip of the Peak District NP. Its outlines are still distinct from the air at about 1000 feet.

Wymeswold (Also known as Prestwold Hall for event organisers) is much used for motorsport corporate entertainment. You know the sort of stuff, a couple of hundred quid to drive a Ferrari on ‘the track’

In the wrong direction but MIRA (Motor Idustry Research Association) just north of Nuneaton, adjacent to the A5 (South/South West of EMA) is an ex-RAF airfield where they DO test cars.

Just Google Earthed that and it looks spot on, as the main runway was to our south right enough. Thanks.
Pity GE is not in more detail over that part of England.

Probably Wymeswold about 8 miles SE of East Midlands airport. Three concrete runways in an RAF style triangular layout.
Any other offers ? I am open to correction.
