One thing has been bugging me since I went to RIAT with Air Atlantique.
Is there really only an inch or so between your nose and the windscreen? Seemed a mite claustrophobic to me. Or was the seat forward? Didn’t seem to be much rom behind the seat for adjustment though. This is spoiling the dream a bit 😉

I was very surprised, when I had the opportunity to sit in a Dak cockpit, how very little room there seemed to be in there. The windscreen is very close to you and of course so is the control panel, nearly said dash then!, it is a very snug fit.
I guess it is so that there is plenty of room behind you for the revenue earning area of the aircraft!
Interestingly the DC6 cockpit is quite a bit larger and the Electra cockpit seemed like a living room in comparison to the Dak!
Sorry I can not give you a pilots perpective though, if I see one in the future I will try to remember to ask.

As the airlines always like to say empty space doesn’t pay its way

Having the windows so close to your eyes means you get an excellent view outside. 🙂

Which is where you should be looking most of the time. It’s what you don’t see that gets you killed

Yes, the windshield is very close… The seats have limited adjustments.. Mostly in height. pilots were issued gautlets to slip on and through the open side window reach out and scrape off iced up windshield.
